Same story probably, a few more hornets would be killed.

Hornets have like big jaws they can snap the bees with, they are basically more or less harmful to the hornets

fuelcell 11-11-2004 04:51 PM

Unbelievable. Those giant hornet scare the shit out of me.

Found this thru google

"African bees have a 1/250 ratio (250 bees to take down a hornet) while European bees have a 1/1000 ratio"

Also this about japanese bees

The Japanese honeybees can detect the hornet's secretion, and attack incoming hornets en masse. With approximately 500 honeybees surrounding the hornet in a tight ball, the temperature within the cluster rises to 47º C (117º F), which is above the upper lethal limit range of 44-46 degrees for the hornet.

This temperature is too high for the hornet, which quickly expires, but does not harm the honeybees. This temperature does not aversely affect the honeybees because their upper lethal limit is slightly higher, 48-50 degrees.

pornguy 11-11-2004 04:56 PM

I got stung on the finger by one of those when I was about 8. Turned out there was a whole nest of them inside the tree I was climbing. I was really lucky I was only stung by one but it hurt like crazy and my finger swelled up alot. :(

I watched the show this came from on tv, discovery? and they showed the video of the honey bees killing a hornet like that. It was badass... All of the bees were vibrating to raise the temperature and the hornet died.

MrJackMeHoff 11-11-2004 07:23 PM

cant get it to work. ;(

BossDVDs 11-11-2004 07:27 PM

"It's not even a battle, it's simply a massacre"

dcortez 11-11-2004 07:29 PM

Does that video clip qualify as a wildlife snuff film?

It looks like they set the whole thing up with cameras (especially inside the hive) before the massacre.

Brutal in any case...
