It think tourism in Cuba might actually drop once he dies. Kind of takes away part of the excitement of even going.

IMO, America should end the embargo against Cuba.

In his address to the 2001, Summit of the Americas in Quebec, President Bush championed the powerful idea that free trade leads to free people.
Time to put that philosophy into action!

The embargo against Cuba is working about as well as the War on Drugs is.

BRISK 11-11-2004 04:10 AM

By the way, why does the US government restrict the freedom of American citizens by not allowing them to travel to Cuba?

Why should Canadians and Europeans enjoy the freedom to travel where they choose, but Americans do not?

Castro is just constrained in his country while the Terror networks of Osama is far more a concern for the international community

Castro is not really the problem. The problem is that the USA has fucked them over and bullied the majority of the world to fuck them over with us. All Castro has in an idea of his Revolution, and he stands by it. The same Revolution that gives them FREE education, FREE healthcare and though it's not much, FREE food. Yea, he may be a little harsh on the people from time to time, and sure you can't speak about the Revolution or Castro negatively, but other than that... hey, you gotta have rules. At least everyone there knows the deal. Believe it or not, they have some freedoms that we don't even have in the USA.

The USA was fine with the Revolution until we considered Castro a threat to national security and cut them off and tried to assassinate him (admitted by the CIA) multiple times. Naturally Cuba had to turn to others for help and chose the Soviet Union. He then becomes our enemy and a little thing called the Cuban Missile Crisis happened. Almost the end of the world. But that was a LONG time ago.

The USSR falls and Cuba is fucked. The only people that will trade with them now is mostly made up of countries who are threats to the USA, which in turn put Cuba on the Axis of Evil list because they now may have WMDs, keeping Cuba on our enemy list. Cuba is no more a threat to the USA than Key West is. What I do know is that I spend a lot of time there and I love Cuba. It's safe and the Cuban government, though strict with rules on it's people, welcomes tourism from all countries.

Another fact you may not know regarding the US base there. It's on a 99 year lease. We leased the land before Castro claimed power and the lease is about up. For the lease payment the USA sends checks to Castro and to date, he has yet to cash a single check. Castro refuses to even acknowledge it's even there, though most others want them gone. The lease is up very soon and it is expected for the US to remain there against Cuba's wishes to leave. Imagine that.

Castro's brother is rumored to continue when Castro dies. The Revolution will probably continue. Don't think he would of put in all this work just to let it die when he does. He is a very smart man. Oliver Stone is quoted as saying he is one of the most intelligent men he has ever met.
