Canadians! What'S the deal with buying a new car from the US, can you import it?

I'm looking at the ridiculous prices our dealers are putting up for cars like the 350Z and figure I'd be better off buying it in the states.

What are the rules? Is it allowed?

BradM 11-09-2004 08:46 PM

Go for it. Then you need to convert it to KMs and follow any other emmissions specs Govt Canada puts out. Not worth it in the end. :)

Well the same Z is $30k USD and about $46k CDN, which after exchange rate makes it about $10k less.

Think it would cost that much?

TTiger 11-09-2004 09:02 PM

the deal for import car are on EBAY audi, mitsubichi eclipse , nissan are very cheap
but i dont knoe if its legal to buy the car and cross the border the same days ..
i just dont know how to do it..
does anyone one have ever import a us car to canada here?
thank you

doober 11-09-2004 09:06 PM

I have been thinking the sme thing for a while now.
Dealers here are just assraping us with these prices, Altho unless you plan to move to the states or stay there awhile it most likely will not be worth doing.

Fucking shame since you can buy a porsche there for 60-80k.

:(

usd 30k=cad 36k + about 6k in import taxes & fees = 42k you save 4k but then you'll have to get all the labels inside your car in both french and canadian, pass an inspection, take care of any recalls but that's only about few 100s but if you could just haggle well the dealers you could prolly get that 4k in savings in canada already.. I always thought cars in canada was cheaper than in U.S.. is why GM made a rule cars imported from ca to US will not be covered fully under factory warranty.. so maybe the dealer pulling your legs anyway?

Just looking at the MSRP, haven't been to dealers yet, the car isn't until march/april but i've been dreaming of that baby for over a year now. I could go buy it now, but i kinda want the 35th edition, and i mean i can live with my current car.

I'm just dreaming alot about it :glugglug

I've been thinking about picking up the 350z also in the U.S but my buddy told me that i'll have to get day time running light installed.. which is not worth it... plus all the taxes and shit!

I have to agree with this guy on that.

Basic_man 11-10-2004 07:55 AM

I know alot of persons who did it.

You need to buy a car that had an accident (VGA).
Then import it to Canada with any transport company,
repair it, and you are in business.

My friend just got a 2001 Ford Explorer for 8000$ REPAIRED ! :thumbsup

TheLegacy 11-10-2004 07:58 AM

dude - never go with sticker price - how far can you negotiate the price down??

check out other dealers in canada and Im sure you will find it cheaper - remember there is more than simply the exchange of $1.20 on the dollar, you have the emissions to check out and other wonderful features that canada insists on for a car that american doesnt have standard on the car.

canada is stricter laws on car's than america - so before a dealer in the USA will sell it (if they are legit), you have alot more dollars to add - and I havent even gotten into what its going to cost you to ship it.
