Shaving tactics

There are so many sponsors and so many of them obviously shave.. I think most of us agree that shaving is stealing some "part" of traffic, wether it be a hit, or a signup, an exit hit, whatever.

But why do we all complain about shaving and thinking people shaving to programs who simply take joins away, when we have people redirecting our traffic to dialers and toolbars who are not giving credit on that traffic where in my opinion credit is due.

I believe the largest shaving going on now is basically something everyone does, geoIP redirection and toolbar installs. Why can't we get credit for these sales? I'm thinking that i'm going to maybe start from now on just geoIP redirecting all my traffic as it comes in so the sponsors cannot take it.

What do you guys think?

I think you just need to send your traffic to programs without traffic leaks. :2 cents:

I have no comment on this one.

shut up then :winkwink:

you reply to loads of threads like this.......you on pay per post?

Phoenix 11-09-2004 04:24 PM

yeah man..if you can monetize that part of the traffic for yourself..id say go for it.

it is easy to "geo-filter" your traffic.

Steen2 11-09-2004 04:27 PM

Shave to me is fraud

GeoIP filter is not as bad as a flat out shave (IMO).

Pornopat 11-09-2004 04:34 PM

That would depend on how you get your traffic. Some tgp's dont like the fact that galleries geotarget the traffic..

atom 11-09-2004 04:34 PM

you should be redirecting your own traffic anyways IMO. Why would i send say german traffic to a sponsor that it may get a sale off of when i can send it to a dialer somewhere else?

I agree Nats is the only way to go ...we use it and i'll only sign up for other programs that use it.... it really works well

There is another way to shave. Set the cookie timeout to 6 hours or so. Then you get all of the surfers who buy later (say 20%) and the affiliate gets all of the surfers who buy immediately.

Pornkings 11-09-2004 05:39 PM

Just see who makes you the most of your traffic.

Or geo track it yourself.

Right now we don't redirect any traffic to dialers. Not worth the webmaster complaints

FreeOnes 11-09-2004 05:39 PM

I agree 200% with your post.
Hopefully it will help...:feels-hot

geoip that shit yourself out to dialers. send the "good" traffic out to reputable sponsors, ccbill sponsors, etc. You'd be surprised how much is to be made from dialers.

do you or anyone else know what is the fastest way to use the maxmind database?

looking at there examples i think i need to install the geoip C api and then the apache geoip api, and then use htaccess to redirect. is this the best way to do it?

also if i use the above, when i want to update maxmind in the future, do i just install it again over the top, to update it, using:

./configure
make
make check
make install

i'm far from an expert with the sort of stuff so any advice appreciated.

thanks

for anyone that is interested, i checked with maxmind and they say that for anyone using static html this is usually the easiest approach. and to update the database just refresh the GeoIP.dat file.

I would really like to know how the sponsor should give you credit for "toolbar" installs or free email boxes or shit :)
how do you wanna track that down? :)
