Am I Insane To Drive From LA to SF the day before Thanksgiving ?
It's about an 6 hour drive with no traffic. There is no way I won't hit traffic no matter what time i leave right ?

reynold 11-09-2004 04:00 PM

6 hours? isn't that a bit long for driving?

hyper 11-09-2004 04:02 PM

I did EXACTLY what you are planning to do, about 9 years ago.

DON'T DO IT!!!!

I sat in my f***ing car for about 11 hours and I was totally exhausted and frustrated.

The next year I went to sleep really early, left at dawn on Thanksgiving day and I was there by noon..... worked out great:2 cents:

Depends where in LA you start out. When I drive the route I leave either early or late to avoid day time LA traffic.

prices are insane already. I guess I could try and leave at 10pm but then I would be there at 4am. Hmmmmmmm maybe I will get a buddy to come with me and share the driving

NichePay_Manny 11-09-2004 04:16 PM

Me too man I am driving to SAN JOSE same shit 51/2 hour.

Gynecologist 11-09-2004 04:18 PM

Considering that you will be sharing the road with mainly southern California drivers I would say you are taking too much risk. That drive north is about as dangerous as the drive to Vegas but because of the length you are twice as likely to end up dead because some fuck cutting you off.

It will take you at least an hour or two just to get through Santa Barbara but once your outa there you're basically home free, It took me 7 1/2 to 8 hours to get from the Valley to San Jose it just depends on the time of day your planning on making this trip. If I were you I would leave as earlier as 6am get there at like 2 or 3pm. Mad cops in between Ventura County all the way up past San Louis Obispo.

Kimmykim 11-09-2004 04:27 PM

Try driving in the middle of the night.

Fuck, I didn't think of that. 1 more ticket and my license is suspended........FUCK ok well i gotta find someone to drive for/ with me. Thanks for the info. By the way are the cops out that early ?

Tala 11-09-2004 04:33 PM

Seriously, drive after midnight. You'll get there around 6 am, (unless you drive like I do, in which case you can expect to arrive somewhere around 4 am), but it's better than sitting in Thanksgiving traffic in California. :2 cents:

Hell yea they are out at all times just waiting, there are sooo many speed traps in that small stretch around all the corners, I have a radar scanner in my car that helps a little but I just wonder if it will catch the radar to late when Im going like 100, you can get away with 80 on that drive. I do it all the time, but the cops will def be out in full force cuz they know that mad people are gonna be driving. Just gotta be smart about which pockets to hit and if you find someone else speeding just go on theyre coat tails and let them get the ticket. Works out pretty well for me.

I was just talking to a friend about an experience I had doing this same thing a few years ago.

Granted, I left around 8PM on Weds evening, but it took 4 hours to get to Magic Mountain.

Her sister flew from LA to San Jose last year and it took her 8 hours due to delays.

You had better read my post above . . . no way do you do it in 6 hours

pornguy 11-09-2004 06:09 PM

more than insane.
There will be a boat load of traffic, plus all the psycho teens in mom and dad's car, racing each other, happy to have the day off at highschool...

Better off flying or leaving a couple days before.

SpikeHeel 11-09-2004 06:42 PM

i don't think driving that far is a good idea.

Hawkeye 11-09-2004 07:06 PM

I will be driving from Reno to LA on the day before Thanksgiving.

I'll probably leave around 6am.
