Pirated U2 album hits Internet
Illicit copies available on file-sharing networks throw official release of new album into question.
Pirated versions of U2's new album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" have emerged on Internet file-sharing networks two weeks before it goes on sale, throwing into question its official release date. A London spokeswoman for the band on Monday would only say that U2 was aware of the illicit copies, but that no decision had yet been made on changing the release date. The Irish rock band has been due to release the album on Nov. 22 in Europe and the following day in the United States. It is the first studio album in four years for the band signed to Island Records, a unit of Universal Music. Earlier this summer, a tape containing rough tracks from the upcoming album went missing from a studio in Nice, France where the band was recording. At the time, the band said it might move the release date if the tracks appear online first. DO you think this is a marketing strategy or what? |

I think they are trying to build a mystery to obtain some street cred. I don't think it will affect sales one bit, if anything the advertising will be positive. |

im guessin all you guys that like U2 are from europe, im sure its allot bigger over there and possibly their style of music fits in better with your society. All i know is that i havent heard one of their songs on the radio in the past 10 years and they still act like they are hot shit.

http://top40-charts.com/chart.php?cid=27 Maybe you're listening to hip hop stations - no, they don't play U2 on those stations. Don't you remember Beautiful Day and Elevation? Those were huge hits too. |
I got it, its not bad. I liked All That You Cant Leave Behind better though, ut it starting to grow on me. Anyhow, I saw them twice on the Elevation tour and they put on one of the best concerts ive ever seen,

how is that a smart marketing strategy.../?

It's funny to see webmasters asking where to find a pirated copy.
1. You're a webmaster and don't know how to find new mp3s?! 2. Don't cry if I hack your memberarea and leech 24/24. At least, keep a low profile and search by yourself, you will look smarter. :2 cents: |
Where is the logic in changing the release date? Some people are stealing the album, so lets delay it's release so people who want it have no choice but to steal it, then complain about how many people are stealing it...:1orglaugh

It's about putting the album on the shelves ASAP, maybe 1 week before the "official date". |

props. |
I like them. I have some of their older albums. Their best stuff was in the 80's and even into the 90's when they first experimented with electronica. Some great stuff. Their most recent releases (recall the "It's a beautiful Day" single) have been overrated.
Looking forward to hearing songs off the new album. |
Seems the first single is number one for legit downloads:

um they played at the '02 SUPERBOWL like em or hate 'em (I'm not the biggest fan) the one thing you can't deny about them is their commercial success, I don't think they've had a single that didn't make it onto billboard. |

for some they consider it strategies but i don't think it's such a good idea. mercy to the artist .:(

U2 rocks :)
I remember when they came out in 82-83 here in the US..... 22 years or so later they are still cranking out hot tunes. They actually play their own instruments, can deliver the goods live and write + record their own material. There arent many bands today that can do that in Top 40 land. More musicians need to understand the power of the live show and actually playing an instrument, writing their own tunes and not having 300 guest stars on an album. |
