$5000 budget for a laptop -- your dream configuration

Assuming you had $5K (and no more than $5K) to spend on a laptop, what would be your dream configuration?

I'm gathering ideas for a replacement to my current Dell laptop.

Details:

Brand?
Hard Drive size?
Memory?
Video Add ons?
DVD specs?

etc etc

Depends on what you want todo with it huh:)

Go for the cheapest.

Why spend big cash on a powerfull laptop?

Even very cheap laptops can cope with most things.

To be honest, I think I would opt for a Mac laptop for the heck of it.

OWNED 11-08-2004 05:00 AM

depends on what u want to do with it.
if you need it for travel - gets something small (which will be even cheaper)

if you need a laptop that won't be leaving your office - get a big workhorse (P4 3.4Mhz 17", 1G RAM) - something like that.

I'd go for a VAIO on P4 processor.

Libertine 11-08-2004 05:02 AM

I'd go for a 12" iBook (yes, I said iBook, not PowerBook) and spend the rest of the money on pizza. All I want is stability, a huge battery life and the ability to write on it :glugglug

I'm really digging the super slim offerings lately. I've been tempted by this little Sony notebook that uses one of those Intel Centrino processors. It has a 10" screen but runs a 1280 width resolution.

the flag scheme is an option. you can have them put whatever graphic you want on the thing. company logos, favorite artwork, whatever you want. Take a look at the site, a few even painted with automotive paint from a viper and a diablo.

I like this one myself. not a laptop obviously, but an example of the stuff they do.

Nice, how much for shipping ? or is that included in the price?

evildick 11-08-2004 06:31 AM

For that price just pick up a top of the line Alienware or FalconNW.

You won't find a better laptop than what they offer.

If you're interested in battery life then you might want to scale things back a bit though.

Good idea. Would be a good idea to have a stationary to use as your main backup as well; quick recovery if you set it up so you can just re-image the harddrive(s).

I'm a big fan of my Dell Inspiron 8600
Centrino Mobile Technology gives it about 3 hours of battery life
and their WUXGA monitor just plain kicks ass

You can pretty much get top of the line everything for about $3700.

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellsto...8600F5&s= dhs

cfU 11-10-2004 02:04 PM

I just got this brand new for $900

Inspiron 9100
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 3.20GHz with HT Tech
15.4-in WXGA
512MB,400MHz
64MB DDR ATI's MOBILITY? RADEON? 9700 AGP 8X Graphics 64ATI
40GB Hard Drive
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
CD ROM/DVD ROM 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
Dell® Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps)
Primary Battery 96 WHr 12-cell Primary Battery with Subwoofer

With 5k, I'd probably get 5 of them.
