Is cat food ok for dogs

Is cat food ok for dogs? I have 2 dogs and 1 cat the dogs refuse to eat doggy food they hover all over the cat when she start eating and will starv themselfs if no cat food is spared. Is it ok or are my dogs really cats and i don't know it.

My dog does that too.. I heard cat food taste better.

Fizzgig 11-05-2004 06:01 PM

I do not recommend anything in your post.

myro 11-05-2004 06:01 PM

hopefully it doesn't have seafood, that's generally a good thing for dogs afaik :)

NetRodent 11-05-2004 06:02 PM

Dogs tend to get fat if they consistently eat cat food. Other than that I don't think anything is wrong with it.

a1ka1ine 11-05-2004 06:02 PM

i think they should be fine, dogs will eat most things.

but then, i really have no idea im just guessing, do you really want to leave your pets life in the hands of my guessing?

a1ka1ine 11-05-2004 06:03 PM

just dont give it chocolate. JD on dead like me died after it ate chocolate ice cream!

if it is, its not posting that often.. unless thats a ploy to lull us..

If you're feeding the cat canned food and the dogs dry food, I don't blame them...

Try Gravy Train or something similar for the dogs... Something moist and savory.

I always heard cat food for dogs was bad for their kidneys somehow. Not sure why, may be an old wives tale but I'd do some research f I were you just in case.

Yes.this.is.

No...
But I know cat food is not nutritious enough for dogs.
Feed them seperately and change the dogs food to something they like.

We changed our cats food a few months ago after finding they really didn't like their food much, well in just about 3 months our cats haven't looked and acted more healthy in their lives. They're like kids really, they eat what they like.

I have six dogs and from what I understand....

Any issues regarding food/supplements are more serious in the long term than short term.

Animals will not die from starvation if they have something edible around, but they do have interesting ways of holding off on eating anything 'questionable' until they hungry 'enough'.

Cat food is not formulated the same as dog food and over the long run, these animals should eat their respective grubs.

Another interesting observation about dogs and eating (as with many animals in the wild)...

If a dog knows there will be food to eat the next day, they eat moderately and many (not all) will stop when they have had enough. Dogs experiencing irregular feeding routines (even just times of day changes) switch to survival mode and scarf back everything they are fed every time they are fed as a protection in the event of (their fear of) not being fed again in a timely manner.

I have saved a tremendous amount of dog food (6 dogs) by simply keeping their buckets completely filled at all times - they almost ignore the food - much like we take things for granted until they are threatened.

I heard same thing. My dog always tries to eat the cat food. Gives her awful gas too. UGH. And I have tried to keep her food full at all times, but she is a fat pig and just kept eating and eating and eating....

Thank you very much for the helpfull info. It's kinda like when i go on a diet i want to eat everything in sight but when i am not i could careless. 6 dogs wow how do you do it?

BitterPen 11-05-2004 06:36 PM

I now have 3 dogs and 1 cat, and my dogs LOVE the cat's food. What I do to keep the dogs out of the cat food is put the cat's food up on the counter and the dog's food down on the floor. Everyone eats appropriately and are happy at the end of the day.

:thumbsup

cuteeeeeeeeeeee.

oldnewbie 11-05-2004 09:10 PM

It's my understanding that cat food is considerably higher in protein than dog food, and that extra protein can damage the dog's kidneys in the long run.

Honestly though, I think as long as it isn't the dog's main source of food, it's probably ok.

Bake 11-05-2004 10:37 PM

Is this a dumb or dumber question?
