Men's watches

Which watch would you recommend a young businessman should buy to look professional, but not pimpy. At the same time, it has to be something that people can recognize by its style. Also, diamonds or no diamonds? gold or platinum? metal band or leather?

EscortBiz 11-05-2004 02:05 AM

what business, what are your goals, are you a financial advisor or a real estate broker are you going on job interviews or are you a travel agent

all depends

baycouples 11-05-2004 02:10 AM

I run a software company. However, my problem is that I'm much younger than people that I meet and do business with and I have to prove myself to them by wearing the same type of clothes, watches, drive the same kind of cards, etc.

just bought this one - about $10K canadian.....

kowntafit 11-05-2004 02:16 AM

Most of those designer mens watches look more like designer fag watches to me. People just go buying the most expensive watch so they think they are 10 times better than everyone else and walk around with some pussy 'elegant' watch with diamonds and all that shit. Get a real mans watch, not a chicks watch. :2 cents:

Just buy a genuine rolex.. Genuine fake. I had one that I sold to my brother a while back for like 100 bucks. I took it into a watch store to have it fitted, and the guy didnt know it was a fake till I told him.

He said I looked to poor and student-like to be wearing a rolex :1orglaugh

This one only cost me $75 and I had about 5 people in florida ask where I got it from...

I got a Cellini with rewards points from ARS. I've always been a non-leather watch band person. After 3 days I returned it for the Yachtmaster that I live in now. I'm rough on watches so a metal band of some sort (in this case stainless and gold) is best for me. I did recently check out a newer Cellini that was platinum. Very nice, but again, I'd be replacing bands like crazy. Their faces also seem to run on the large size. I bumped the edge of it more than once during the few days I had it.

For my tastes, if you're set on a Cellini, go the extra and get this one.. http://www.rolex.com/collections/cel...cellinium.html
I've had it on my wrist (yeah way too large cause it's a man's watch), but it's very classy.

Sorry, I didn't mean to bash. Its just every time there is a watch thread people pull out all these pics of watches I could never imagine anyone wearing. Maybe I just have different taste to most people here.

But if you would like to know what I like, as you asked, I don't like gold. My watch is stainless steel, I have a stainless steel labret piercing, silver chain bracelets and a silver chain necklace. I wear mainly black and I have near black hair, pretty tan skin. I just dont like the look of gold, black and silver look much better to me. My watch is polished stainless steel and a decent size, not a little watch, but not hugely bulky. Something more like the metal ones that were being endorsed by James Bond. Not exactly that but that kind of style. I think Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer all have some nice watches. They are pretty expensive but when I meant people spending a fortune before, I meant like $15K gold/diamond stuff. Mine was only about $200US, I have had it for about 3 years, used to go surfing with it all the time, still looks good. But to me those seem more like a real mans watches. So that is what I like. The more eligent designer style ones seem to be more popular here on GFY but it is all a matter of what you like. By the sounds of it you are only looking for a status symbol, so eligant style will probably get you more respect. That is pretty superficial though. As long as you dress smart, I think having charactor is a good thing.

I think some people think silver or stainless steel is the poor mans gold. My girlfiend wears either silver or white gold, I think white gold is actually more valuable than gold. One of the jewelers I spoke to told me that some of the materials which are mixed with the gold are actually more expensive than the gold itself, which is why white gold is sometimes dearer. I think platinum is one of them. Anyway, wear what you think looks cool, or in your case, what other people think looks cool if you are trying to impress them.

I don't mean to offend.
Best of luck.

baycouples 11-05-2004 03:29 AM

kowntafit, now we're talking!

First, I have read and observed that gold is OUT!

Also, bands have to be leather and not metal.

I do like Movado a lot. Everybody knows what it looks like, it looks great and it's genius because it's simple. Nice diamond Movado watch, mechanic, leather band in silver design is about $3K which I think is reasonable.

You guys need to read my original posting. I don't care what your watch looks like. I want to know what mind should look like. Don't give me any names that no one except for you, me and some Forbes magazine readers would ever recognize. I'm not putting $3K into a watch only I know is worth that much. Movado, Rolex, Gucci are the brands that people recognize - others are junk.

So, let's get back to the topic.
