I have taken a trip arround canada... and I was surprised to see so little french in all the provinces which are supposed to be bilingual...

but I didn't care much hehe..

guess it depends where you go... cuz manitobans I found were a really nice group of people, really welcoming... so were albertans in Jasper,... fuckin nice place..

I have a Canadian friend of Chinese extraction, who came out to Australia back in the 70's. He originally came from Bamf, Alberta, yet had to learn French to teach in Calgary. Fuck, I didn't think there were that many frogs leaping onto the back of cattle in the stampede to justify that. I think he came out to Australia because of our lack of snow and French.

Back in the early nineties, I met this French speaking couple in Australia. I thought they were from from France,.. they were from Quebec. The wife could hardly speak English, yet was a teacher in Quebec.

There was one survey done across a range of US cities on July the 4th of this year, and 1 out of 3 Americans asked couldn't even identify exactly what july 4th signified!! Approximately 20 Americans walking the streets of a city in Florida (Tampa I think) could not name even one province or the capital of Canada or name it's prime minister. The closest any of them came to naming a province was "Molsen" or "Moosehead". One thought that Ottawa was a province, so he got a point for knowing the word "Ottawa".

You will find that your %'s are boned big time Rod, and that not only can a very large # of Canadians name all of our provinces and territories, but we can name more states than many Americans. I would also hazard a good guess that we know more about world history than our US counterparts. How many Americans know all about the Alamo and Valley Forge, yet know nothing about the war of 1812 (where Canada kicked their asses but good)

Every survey of general questions about Canada and even some US things, when put to US citizens and then shown on TV has been downright funny. Even my American friends laugh at that shit.

I once had an American dude at a gas station in Orlando refuse to accept my U.S. traveler's cheque because it said in tiny print on it "Bank of Canada", yet beside the "$20.00" it also said "U.S.", but he kept saying "We don' take Canaydeean munny heer" DUHHHHHH!! I could NOT convince this moron that it WAS US money purchased in Canada!!

As for "vive la quebec", I agree, Quebec is a great province, and most of the people there are awesome. I have tons of relatives that live there, and I lived in Montreal for 2 months during the 76 Olympics, it was great (aside from the dogshit everywhere). It's not Quebec that sucks with big lips, it's the separatist extremists that bite the big one. Fortunately they are in the minority.

Did you know if your a store owner your signs had to have french letters 1.5x bigger than the english ones. They have "Language Police" who go around measuring signs.

There was a lawsuit not too long ago Quebec VS Montreal Website Owner. This guy was running a business online and the language police demanded that his site shuts down if he didn't change his content to french. He did win but at the same time spent thousands on lawyers. Talk about unfair.

They should also kill the whole french is mandatory in College. If your in an English college I highly doubt you plan on sticking around a french company to wotk with.

Sorry Dude, But you seem to forget an imporftant reality, there is 5 million french speaking people in North-America against 350 million english speaking persons.
This is why there are laws to protect the french culture in quebec from the colonial attemps of english loyalist from high-canada to assimilate the french speaking population.
Just look 40 years ago (hehe my parents where not even in canada at that time, nor was I even remotely close to be born) when on St-Catherine, every store was english and controled by a few english elite (Eaton, Simpson, Berks, GreenBerg, SteinBerg ... you name it) There as been tremendous discrimination against the french as a whole in this country (Like not being able to receive document ion french at your place of work in a fench dominated at 80% by french for exemple) and now that they are trying to take over their culture and assure it's survival (Not to end up like the people you guys deported in Acadie!) you can't stand it.
Well it's ok my imperialist, colonialist , loyalist, english friend, you can kiss the Queen rings all you want, this culture is assuming it's identity now and are more and more assuming it's autonomy.

The time is comming when you will have to treat this nation with respect, or else, the end of the confederation is near.

Listen, and listen good, from a guy that grew up in white-bread English Canada yet now lives in the heart of the largest French community in Canada outside of Quebec (St. Boniface) -- I have never complained about being forced to leard French (grade 3 to grade 10 mandatory), over the years I've known and befreinded tons and tons of French people, and in the 15 years of working in a French Catholic hospital (St. Boniface General) I came to understand even more of how the French value their culture. I consider myself to be a typical English-speaking Canadian in this regard, and I am very proud of Canada's French heritage and I'm proud to call old St. Boniface my home for the past 11 years.

What I am NOT proud of is all the separatist crap that has gone on over the years, from fuckers on St. Jean Babtiste day wiping their French fucking asses with the Canadian flag on Mount Royal to that Canadian shop-keeper mentioned above that was ordered to make the French words on his sign bigger than the English words, to the busloads of English schoolkids on a field trip having rocks thrown at their schoolbuses in the weeks following the referendum, to the fucking FLQ bombings back in 1970 during the October crisis. I was in the first grade at the time, and even wayyy out here yes it was a big deal. <a href="http://tetley.law.mcgill.ca/Octoberbook.htm" TARGET="_blank">READ UP ON THE OCTOBER CRISIS HERE</a>

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I have lots of relatives that have lived in Quebec all their lives, my dad is from there, I have friends there, many are of French heritage, and NONE of them want to separate. There is nothing wrong with valuing your heritage, nothing wrong with teaching your children what it means to be French-Canadian, but the rest of Canada will ALWAYS draw the line when people become disloyal ungrateful separatists and start causing problems for the country. Some people in Quebec wonder why they get little or no respect from the rest of Canada?
