Pretty much. The Republicans used to be in the exact same situation some 25 years ago. They decided what the party values would be and then picked a candidate (Ronald Reagan) that could present those ideas.

The Democrats refuse to see the light. Instead of coming up with a platform and finding a candidate it seems they're always trying to build a platform around a candidate. Bill Clinton aside, It hasn't been working well.
