SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police are investigating a hate crime in University City.
The attack took place outside an apartment in the 5200 block of Genesee Cove on Wednesday just after 11 p.m. The victim, who is ofPortuguese descent, told police that five white men in their 20s mistook him for a Middle-Eastern man.
The police say the victim was parking his car when the men threw a beer bottle at his vehicle, shattering one of the windows.
The attackers beat up the victim, knocking him to the ground and kicking, yelling anti-Arabic slurs and that he should "go back to Iraq."
The five men then took his shoes and got into a black SUV. They told the man that they would be back to kill him later and fled.
The police were questioning three suspects about the attack on Thursday morning.
