Bush getting re-elected is not the end of the world

He is not the antichrist, he will not start WWIII and he will not turn the US into a dictatorship.

He's an incompetent asshole who follows a fundamentally flawed ideology, but that's it. This is not the end of the world :2 cents:

You're right it's not the end, it's just the begining of the end.

Libertine 11-03-2004 07:12 AM

Even if that's the case - which I seriously doubt - western culture and liberal democracy are strong enough to last for several generations before falling apart.

That may well be true but what we saw of a Republican dominated government headed by Bush was only the begining because he was worried about getting a second term. Now they don't have a re-election to worry about ever again so they can go all out and reall fuck things up.

Backed by a strong Republican congress, and having the power to appoint several new Supreme Court Justices during this term, he can do a LOT of damage before his time is up.

Libertine 11-03-2004 07:23 AM

He can and probably will do a lot of damage. However, "a lot of damage" is not the apocalypse many seem to have in mind. Less civil liberties, more religious/conservative policies, a more aggressive foreign policy (and the consequent damage to foreign relations) are a given.

However, it's important to see it in perspective, and realize that it won't have a huge effect on people's daily lives. Well, except for those who get sent off to some distant country to get blown up by religious fanatics, and their families ofcourse.

I have tried telling myself the same thing. But when I look at his record I just cannot see him toneing it down that much. No president has ever lied to us the way he has and I have to agree that he has been held back from really pushing his full agenda so that he can win re-election.

Sure your right that Democracy and the American ideology cannot be torn down with one Presidency, but the damage, as evident from last night, has already proven very hard to recover from. I keep my fingers crossed that Bush may this time realize his mistake and govern more towards the center, but I will not hold my breath.

He, as all Republicans must learn, Democracy does not mean simply majority rule, it means the majority leads with respect to the minority.

Vendot 11-03-2004 07:39 AM

If you think he's incapable of bringing on WWIII then I think you seriously underestimate how disasterous his foreign policy is. Hatred is swelling in east against the west and its largely due to the policies he is pursuing in the middle east, over Iraq and Iran.

God forbid, he takes military action against Iran or North Korea, we're gonna see our first nuclear bomb of the new millenium explode someplace (probably the USA).

Wrong.

The world is closer to war today than any time since 1970, and possibly even since 1945.

American citizens are closer to losing their rights to be free than any time in history.

The porn industry (online) is closer to the brink today than it was yesterday, 4 years of the processing dance card getting smaller and smaller will finally break when one of the last 2 or 3 major CC 2rd party companies bites it.

2257 regulations: Get ready. With Bush and ashhahahahaha badk to work, expect these to move forward.

It's not the end of the world, but we are one step closer.

This is correct.... I've been studying it for some time.

I believe I know who the antichrist is but it matters not as the antichrist (as explained in the bible) will reveal himself before he launches his war and that time is apparently soon.
