Windows Media Player files - hotlinking protection

A friend of mine has been having some problems with hotlinking of WndowsMedia files, and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions.

Hotlinking can be protected against by .htacess restricting referrer access, as most everyone knows. But Windows Media Player opens up these files, and doesn't record the referrer like a browser does. This makes these files available for hotlinking in certain situations, primarily free sites.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or have you worked through this problem before?

Thanks in advance
