The Alexa ranking and number of posts on forums indicate that it's very popular.

Yeah, it's cool, it's a community but it seems to be niche anyway.

I like that site because it shows the girls personality - I don't like the pics - amatuer at best but I like the girls style - the tatoos and piercings, wardrobe - like real life anime characters. The members are really active as a community. It's a sub-culture portal.
