Whats the prob? Send me a traceroute, if its in our upstream, I'll get them on top of the issue right away ... Email to ceastman @ splitinfinity . com

Here's a traceroute from my cable modem, everything seems fine for me, we have not received any complaints either ..

Especially when according to their sig, they seem to be another hosting provider .. I don't know who they are. But what a way to take a shot at a hosting provider to post something like that late at night :) ... Yes, if there was a problem someone could have simply come to us to let us know.

SplitInfinity 10-31-2004 12:39 AM

We rateshape pings, broadcasts and etc to that ip because its our nameserver and no one should be pinging it. :-)

Are you a customer of ours Eve? Seems to me you work for a hosting company......

golightnetworks is it?

yeah, just noticed the servers seemed unresponsive, ie: slow load times. Not a customer, just pointing it out. I own a hosting company, but it is a little different than the normal run of the mill host, as we provide "special" services.

Dedication to the business, whats Halloween? Oh, one of those Holiday things..? No time to celebrate those!

Doctor Dre 10-31-2004 12:45 AM

I'm not saying that for split infinity thought ... they are a really good host :)

Magg 10-31-2004 12:46 AM

Hi Datatank! :-)

Hows things? :-)

Were sitting here watching for flaming bags of pooh on our door. :-)

Ding dong. :-)

No network issues here.

I just disabled pings on ns1 and ns2 (actually Prodiac did) so people just dont ping them.

Seems that when you do the "right" thing and rateshape limit pings other hosts use it against you.

Here is the ipchains to rateshape pings, if anyone is interested, it stops alot of attacks.... Some SYN flooding and etc....

Code:

# Turn on tcp_syncookies
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies

#Reduce DoS'ing ability by reducing timeouts
echo 30 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout
echo 1800 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_keepalive_time
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_sack
echo 1280 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_max_syn_backlog

#ANTISPOOFING
for a in /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/*/rp_filter;
do
echo 1 > $a
done

##
#NO SOURCE ROUTE
for z in /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/*/accept_source_route;
do
echo 0 > $z
done

#SYN COOKIES
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_broadcasts
#echo $ICMP_ECHOREPLY_RATE > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echoreply_rate
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_ignore_bogus_error_responses
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/accept_redirects
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/log_martians

# NUMBER OF CONNECTIONS TO TRACK
echo "65535" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max

/sbin/iptables -N syn-flood
/sbin/iptables -A syn-flood -m limit --limit 100/second --limit-burst 150 -j RETURN
/sbin/iptables -A syn-flood -j LOG --log-prefix "SYN flood: "
/sbin/iptables -A syn-flood -j DROP

Eve 10-31-2004 12:57 AM

you should add the linux "equivalent" of

block return-rst in log quick on bge0 proto tcp from any to any flags FUP
block return-rst in log quick on bge0 proto tcp from any to any flags SF/SFRA
block return-rst in log quick on bge0 proto tcp from any to any flags /SFRA

it avoids you giving up info like:

Device type: general purpose
Running: Linux 2.4.X|2.5.X
OS details: Linux Kernel 2.4.0 - 2.5.20
Uptime 147.061 days (since Sun Jun 6 02:29:14 2004)

Things are great .. I feel bad for Chris Eastman who spent about 30 hours last week moving sites and configuring scripts for me. All for the one standard hosting fee :thumbsup

I'm seeing that too. Not seeing shit enroute though....it's weird..I first noticed it with Epics site, then splitinfinity.com

I saw a major ass burp on a trace to one of your servers. On the verio side, not Cox though.

Cox and Verio have been having peering issues for months .. I don't know why they can't seem to get along, but atleast once a month, I can't get to verio from cox .. othertimes it is slow .. i hate cox.

That must be it then. I didn't see the slowdown on Cocks side.

what do you expect from a company that doesn't even have it's own ip space?

they only use verio so if verio has problems so do they, get yourself a multihomed host that uses multiple providers :2 cents:

Just a heads up.

Not really trying to make friends or bust balls on GFY, just do business occasionally and kill time. If my shit was slow, I would want to know about it, but then again I have a monitoring system and load monitors that let me know if it is. I am guessing just from what I have seen if SI's network from the outside that the inside may not be that tight either. Multiple hostnames to single boxes, IP aliases up the wazoo, massive uptimes of their own boxes, mysql listening on outside interfaces. I am not talking shit, just making an observation that an otherwise non-network savvy webmaster might not notice. And wtf does post count have to do with anything? Show that I have more free time then the next guy? Why are you busting my balls?

yeah, just noticed the servers seemed unresponsive, ie: slow load times. Not a customer, just pointing it out. I own a hosting company, but it is a little different than the normal run of the mill host, as we provide "special" services.
I don't believe this:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

LOL, children. LOL

That wasn't a threat 50... just a statement.
"Be careful what you post, make sure you got your facts straight."

Simple really.... if you dont get your facts straight, people will not honor your words. Bottom line is, you dont know anything about the innards of SplitInfinity or how and who we are tied at the hip to... So before you go over working your hamster on that BGP wheel, I just wanted to call your attention to things you dont know.

:-)
Cheers

Eve - And how long have you been in Adult?

Sorry to break it to ya, most adult webmasters have small accounts and un dedicated hosting services. Its the option of choice for the "Majority" of Adult webmaster's.

Things at hosting companies are like this for adult accross the board. So it really is not a surprise to see several accounts on one box. Did you even research what your getting into?

Speaking of honoring your words
You said that you are not 100% verio BUT

NS1.SPLITINFINITY.NET 130.94.133.17
NS2.SPLITINFINITY.NET 130.94.133.18

both of your Name servers are on verio - SO if verio has issues so does splitinfinity NO?

I've been in and out since 1995. I know the game from almost all angles. It doesn't really interest me anymore, whereas the backend technology does. I know what I am getting into. :Graucho
I've been a Unix/network admin all of my adult life, and even before then. The smallers guy will always used shared hosting or UML's, which we will offer, bu t that is not who golight targets.

I really didn't intend for this to turn into a pissing match, but I guess I shouldn't have whipped it out on the playground. Sleep dep must affect my foresight ;)

I saw a major ass burp on a trace to one of your servers. On the verio side, not Cox though.

I click on your link and I get:

Not really saying anyone has problems. We are redesigning our page, not really a big deal. Most of our deals take place real-world, so we can handle not having a site up 24x7. Golight is a new subsidiary anyway, that is targeting the hosting/CDN space. Not really a problem from where I stand. :Graucho
