Hobbits were Real! Skeleton Found
"A team of Australian and Indonesian archaeologists has unearthed the skeleton of a new species of human in a cave on the remote Indonesian island of Flores.
Less than one metre tall, it's been nicknamed the 'Hobbit' and it's estimated to be 18,000 years old. Its discovery suggests early humans branched into more forms than previously thought and that there was a time, not so long ago, when two very different human species walked the planet. It's been the site of painstaking excavation by a team of Australian and Indonesian archaeologists for the past four years. Today, they revealed their astonishing discovery to the world - a new species of human. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MIKE MORWOOD: The scientific name for this new species is Homo floresiensis, but we're calling the skeleton 'Hobbit.' TRACY BOWDEN: The hobbit was found about halfway between the Asian and Australian continents on the Indonesian island of Flores, about 600km east of Bali. Covered in mud and silt, the female skeleton was found 6 metres below the surface. TRACY BOWDEN: Associate Professor Mike Morwood from the University of New England was team leader. He says at first archaeologists thought they'd found the remains of a child. But closer inspection revealed the tiny skeleton was that of an adult. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MIKE MORWOOD: They're about the size of a three-year-old child. The skeleton we found is about a metre tall, which is not very big, Very small head, very, very small brain. That's smaller than a chimpanzee brain. PROFESSOR BERT ROBERTS: These people would have been utterly distinctive. Thick eyebrow ridges, sloping forehead, quite a solid jaw, head the size of a grapefruit, and fully upright. Definitely human, they weren't apes, weren't swinging out the trees. Definitely walking people, and they were doing an awful lot of things that we can do. More articles including source: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=hobbit |
