Stephen King's The Dark Tower

Anyone reading/read it? Good stuff.

Donny 10-27-2004 08:20 PM

Finished book 7 last week. I loved it. The ending fits, but it depressed me.

I want to read them all again, but I think I'll just listen to them on CD for the second time around. I won an eBay auction yesterday for all 7 books on CD.

MrIzzz 10-27-2004 08:21 PM

i never read the other books after the 4th one, damn, but the story is great so far

reynold 10-27-2004 08:42 PM

i only read the gunslinger. was that book 3 already?

hottoddy 10-27-2004 09:30 PM

I own them all but have only read the Gunslinger. I found the it interesting but kinda vague and artsy farty (minimalist pseudo poetic fiction?). I really want to like them, but the jury is still out ...

Being a huge Stephen King fan I'm ahsamed to say I haven't, but I'm dying to find the time to sit down and enjoy the book! :2 cents:

And each of the 7 is 700 or more pages. :)

Couldn't get past the first book. I'm usually a huge King fan but.. I dunno. Couldn't get into it.

the_wizz 10-27-2004 09:52 PM

I've read all but the latest (I think).

I have to say, I loved this series and I don't usually like his writing... I think he's too dark.

But this held my interests...

GirlNinja 10-27-2004 09:53 PM

I love Bag of Bones though.

abyss_al 10-27-2004 09:53 PM

great book :thumbsup

i have all his books

NickPapageorgio 10-27-2004 09:56 PM

I love The Dark Tower series but none of his books is as good as The Stand to me. That book really sucks you in. Is 7 the last in the series btw? I am still reading The Wolves Of Calla...

Never read The Stand but I remember watching the movie miniseries. Was stupid. Not only was it bad, but the ending was horrid. Hours and hours of buildup to the big final stand of good versus evil..... and a nutcase drives a bomb in to kill the big bad meanie. Oooh how did he ever come up with such a clever ending?

Yes, #7 is the last one.

Ok I am no good with surprises. Does Roland die and does he reach the tower?

I can't give that away.

What I can say is that some will be disappointed with the ending, but if you're a fan you'll realize that the ending is totally fitting. Stephen King says he isn't telling the story, the story is telling itself through him and he's just the messenger. After reading all 7 Dark Tower books I almost believe it.

sicktwistedmedia 10-27-2004 10:22 PM

I read the first three, but I'll never have time now to finish the series.

Would like to know how it all ends though.

It is a little abstract, but pick up the second book - I think you'll find yourself drawn into it immediately with the continuation of the story...

stephen king writes very lucidly. nifty ideas too (langoliers) i'm a fan of his writings. special mention to pet sematary. yeah and some of the movie versions sucked.

With the exception of this series, I find it very hard to appreciate his work. I think he too often has a lot of filler to just make his books appear thicker.

He has a tendancy to drag out a lot of meaningless details in a lot of his stories that has no impact on the story itself.

But that's just me.

sicktwistedmedia 10-28-2004 12:17 PM

All the meaningless details are how he draws you into the story. As annoying as it can be sometimes, there's a reason for it.

Anyway, the first book in the Dark Tower series is written really differant, much like Eye Of The Dragon. He writes it like a fairy tale. But the books after that are written in his usual style.
