IRS: Is this a bad sign?

I received two letters from the IRS.

One to my biz address with my Tax ID, another to my home address with my SS#.

Both asking for me to "update" my records.

Anyone else get anything like this?

Or should I be expecting an audit?

EscortBiz 10-27-2004 12:41 PM

brings the total to 12 noiw who have recently been contacted by the IRS in this biz

bringer 10-27-2004 12:41 PM

sounds like a "here we come" warning

Warden 10-27-2004 12:41 PM

ANYTIME the IRS looks you up, isn't good. Out of site, out of mind is always a good thing with the IRS.

Bizarre.

SpaceAce 10-27-2004 12:43 PM

Better check the return address and make sure it isn't going to somewhere in Nigeria.

Yup. As long as all your shit is in order you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If not, lawyers that specialize in that type of thing aren't cheap. :2 cents:

Heh, I was just kidding, anyway :) I don't know what it means but given EscortBiz's comments, it sounds ominous. Of course, anything related to the IRS sounds ominous; that's what keeps them in business.

If they will come you get no warning. They work on the surpise method :1orglaugh

I just got the fucking scare of my life too...... but mine was in the way of two certified letters from my STATE. and they wanted money. I have just spent the last 2 hours hunting down bank statements and I got to call them and tell them they are dead wrong..... I paid my damn taxes. She didn't like me much after I told her that they got my money and cashed my check and now *I* want to know what they did with MY money. GOD that felt so good to declare and prove them wrong. :1orglaugh

Toss everything more than 3yrs old(personal) and 5yrs(business). Been through it before. Don't give them more than they ask for and got forbid you don't have what they do ask for.

never fun to be contacted by the tax people :(

Gynecologist 10-27-2004 01:44 PM

Not all audits are the same. Some only require you to send in some info, others are move invasive where you actually have to meet with the IRS.

TheJimmy 10-27-2004 01:52 PM

You're not alone :/

We got both letters, too... a little while ago...

My accountant called them. They just wanted us to update our information. Our address had changed within the last three years. We called them, too. They repeated the same thing.

I'm sure it's more than just 'this biz'...

only reason I'm not willing to totally go for any conspiracy theory yet, is that it's nearing the end of the year, and money's tight so they've probably been told to go on overtime in regards to collection of debts due, and to close out any OPEN files...

BigFish 10-27-2004 01:56 PM

hah. Maybe you GFYers should stop claiming audit flag deductions on your tax return. :1orglaugh

Chichio 10-27-2004 02:16 PM

I would guess it's more on the "they think you owe money" side.

Just to give you an idea of how bureaucratic the IRS is: they sent me a letter requesting an address update; I did it sent it back. I got another and I did it sent it back again. I got another, I personally called them and sat on the phone to talk with someone and had them change my address in the database. I get yet another letter about a year later. They STILL DIDN'T HAVE MY INFO RIGHT. It was simply amazing.

And on a serious note, hope everything goes well if it's an audit.
