You guys don't have ditches here that's why. Nowhere for the street water to go but sit on the road.

uno 10-26-2004 09:28 PM

Have the landslides started yet?

I've just seen KCAL 9 news talking about the "flooding" in Burbank and how all the cars keep breaking down.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

That's not flooding, that's a couple of inches of standing water! If SoCal people actually knew how to drive in rain (here's a tip - slow down BEFORE getting to the standing water!) there wouldn't be a problem...

I ordered a pizza earlier - it took 90 minutes before it was delivered. The delivery guy (who was Ukrainian and had no problem with the rain) told me that the reason it took so long was because all the delivery drivers were refusing to drive in the rain 'cos it was too dangerous.

Then again, I am English so as far as I'm concerned this is just a normal rain shower...

murray_dawg 10-26-2004 10:15 PM

volante: I hear ya man. I am from a very raining climate, so granted I am a lot more used to it. But this is insane. I heard some wind... OH NO! Everyone run. LOL

I did a bunch of sand bagging at Point Mugu a few years back during El Nino 1998, or maybe it was 1999. Some streets were flooded waist high.

That's super.

Thurbs 10-26-2004 10:19 PM

i remember those rain storms like 9 years ago, i was living with my mom in Malibu and like the whole town of calabasas was destroyed by the mudslides from like 5 inches of rain lol.

that was rediculous.

baddog 10-26-2004 10:23 PM

There are a few problems with rain around here, I will list a few of them

1. It rains so seldom that the roads get soaked with oil. since oil floats on water when it rains the oil comes out of the asphalt making the roads very slick (kind of like when you guys get ice on the roads.

2. Because of the fires we have (last year at this time everything was on fire if you will recall) the rain causes mudslides which clogs up our drainage systems with mud and small trees, which prevents proper drainage .

3. We don't have "ditches."

4. We have flood plains . . . they are going to flood.

5. Concrete does not absorb water very quickly

6. We have idiots from all over the place driving on our streets. Keep the Canadians and New Yorkers inside and our roads would be fine.

El Nino was a trip . . . . it did not help that the only transportation I had at the time was my Harley.

pornguy 10-26-2004 10:26 PM

You have never seen water run off, until you drive a few miles south of the border. Just get into Tijuana.

It is crazy.

Californians can't seem to drive properly in the dry, let alone the wet...
