I have seen a message board posting details on how to crack a website and asking its members to try to bring it down.

Is that legal or not?

I believe that internet hacking is now officially a federal crime which might even get you a no questions asked free trip to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

If not, it does violate most Acceptable Terms of Use Policies of most of the infrastructure you'll be passing through to perform your mischief.
