I did an advertising deal with the guys that owned Car.com (the singular version) at the beginning of the year. They sold that over the summer for 8 figures but kept it quiet and out of the news.

He told me it was bringing in 3 million car buyer leads per year and facilitating 1.5 million transactions annually.

I don't know what Cars.com has sold for, but I don't think it was at that, though it would surely be now.

Barry Diller's USA Interactive had acquired 68% of it in publicly traded stock by 2003 and then paid $1.1 Billion for the last 3rd to fully own it.

That would make them responsible for over a billion dollars worth of transactions.

1.5 Million * $10k (Modest estimate per car) = $1.5 Billion

Some big money is being made there. I wonder how they get on per average unit sold.

I worked for the company that owned cars.com and careerbuilder.com, etc. Cars.com was registered long ago by the Detroit Free Press newspaper as the online automotive section of that newspaper's website. Knight Ridder, the corporate parent, gave the domain to Classified Ventures, inc. in order to develop as a national portal.
