Its now official: Brooklyn is the most expensive for car insurance

Scams by criminal syndicates are jacking auto-insurance rates in Brooklyn to the highest in the country and costing consumers millions of dollars, according to a new report.

The crime rings approach accident victims ? and sometimes even stage crashes ? to claim injuries that are corroborated by bogus medical clinics, the report's authors said yesterday. In fact, the report asserts that $500 million of the state's annual $1.4 billion in bogus claims are initiated in Brooklyn.

"It's a massive problem," said Assemblyman Jim Brennan (D-Brooklyn), who served on the task force that wrote the study. "As much as 40 percent of your premium is paid out in fraudulent claims."

The report, titled "Putting the Brakes on Out of Control Rates," was put together by a panel assembled by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, to find out why Brooklyn's auto-insurance rates are the highest in the country.

"The auto-insurance industry is in crisis," Markowitz said.

Brooklyn residents can pay $4,092 with State Farm, while the same policy would cost just $1,161 elsewhere in the state, the study said. And the single biggest reason for the lofty cost in Brooklyn is insurance fraud, the lawmakers argued.

The scams take advantage of New York state's no-fault law, which can pay out up to $50,000 in injuries and lost wages to someone involved in an auto accident, regardless of who is at fault.
