This Sort Of Sucks...But Might Benefit The Porn Industry
 

My DSL service provider has teamed up with prodigy and they have decided to eliminate certain alt.binaries newsgroups.

"Which newsgroups are being eliminated? Groups that will not be offered are alt.binaries with some combination of the following suffixes: sounds, mp3, cd.image(s), movies, multimedia, warez, vcd. Due to their nature, these are the groups that contain multi-part postings of digital files that are likely to contain copyrighted material"

Is this the wave of the future due to the whole Napster affair?

Like I said it sucks, but it will probably be a shot in the arm for the porn industry due to the fact that thousands of subscribers will be without their free porn and will either have to:

#1 Pay for a nother newsgroup provider i.e. easynews

#2 Hit the galleries and possibly sign up for a paysite.

According to the DMCA, your ISP is not responsible for the content of the news groups but they will save a lot of bandwidth (and money) if they remove them.

That's not necessarily true.

Earlier this summer an isp was charged for trafficking cp due to providing certain newsgroups.

I don't have the link to the article but it stemmed from the fact that they were informed it was on their servers by users and was never removed. I don't know the outcome of any charges that were filed but do know the isp had said in the article that they would no longer provide certain newsgroups that could contain such content.

Now that does involve criminal matters and not civil matters...either way this is an interesting turn of events.

If more isp's followed suit due to possible legal issues whether civil or criminal it could very well be a big boon to the online porn industry.

Actually once a host of sorts (defined as someone making a profit off the stolen images) has been notified under DCMA, if the images are not removed, the host then becomes liable along with the theives.

We probably get 20+ complaints a day on average between Cavecreek and CCBill, and like most other businesses I know, we take it seriously --

The idea that someone would want to go to litigation over some stolen content is just plain silly.

Yes, that is absolutely correct but I doubt that the copyright owner notified eroswebmaster's OSP about every single file in these newsgroups therefore this OSP did not have to remove these newsgroups, legally.

RK more than likely you are correct it is a financial consideration.

But that financial consideration could also be affected by decisions likes the one against Napster.

If I remember correctly didn't the recording industry say that their next step would be to go after isp's offering such binary groups as mp3's?

I may be wrong and in most cases am...lol.

But like I said this is an interesting turn in events to say the least.

There will be thousands of people affected by this decision (let's hope they come to us for porn http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/biggrin.gif) as it is a pretty large isp...the isp is swbell and they are teaming up with prodigy.
