how vulnerable is your business to the message boards?
 

do you depend on them? could they destroy your business depending on how you are perceived? or do they really not affect your business?

Not at all. I got banned and business isn't dropping. It's about relationships. Once you build them you don't need the board.

Besides any new folks joining are just russians and surfers so it makes no difference for at least the last 6 months.

depends on just how transparent you make it. you'd be a fool to take your biz secrets out into the public... and if you keep it at least somewhat low, you have nothing to fear

And plus, what kind of vulnerabilities are there? Shaving? Just don't do it and you have nothing to fear.

Could it destroy my business i would say not but a nice % comes from boards here or there.

same here, as a designer it made me where I am now.

Lately I get the most orders from people who refferered me though.

Most of my business is done through word of mouth and previously existing relationships, the boards are not as important to me as they once were. Though very soon I will be taking advantage of their power once again. :Graucho

Message boards aren't as important to me now as when i was first starting, although there's still some people i'd like to due biz with, so it wouldn't bone my business, but it would probably piss me off.
