Stopping Smart tags

Hi Everyone,

For anyone that wants the script that automatically adds the smart tag stopper
across all your pages: http://perlcoders.com/scripts/free

If you do not know what smart tags can do to your traffic, read this now:
http://killertacticsjournal.com/arch...082001d_082101

The above script is free as a service to webmasters from PerlCoders

Also, any resource webmaster that wishes to post the script itself as a service to your visitors, feel free. I only ask that you leave our headers and copyright in the script.

Thanks for the info...I really appreciate you computer literate guys passing this info along to us less informed.

So much shit to worry about!!!

jaYMan 08-16-2001 11:56 PM

How many cases of the smartlinks you expect there to be? Obviously enough to code a way around it eh?

Totally not cool for there to be a way to change a persons html code.

This shit is important people. Change your pages.

Kat - Fast 08-17-2001 02:43 AM

are you freehosts implementing that perl code or do we have to bite our keyboards and pull our hair out?

boneprone 08-17-2001 02:56 AM

is <meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE"> not enough??

boneprone 08-17-2001 02:57 AM

meta name="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" content="TRUE"

in the head not enough?

nuclei 08-17-2001 03:00 AM

Boneprone,

The script just adds the meta tag you pasted en masse. Meaning if you have 13,000 html documents (like I did) it takes about 6.2 minutes on a fast server to add it to ALL html files on the server.

Much easier than attempting to hand paste the meta tag in 13k files =)

titmowse 08-17-2001 03:12 AM

like Lensman said...this is important shit. Do you not get it?

On the new MS OS, users will type in search terms on their homepage. When the results load, the links will have little tabs. Tabs similar to the tabs on a folder in your file cabinet.

Those new MS OS users will click on those tabs and go to sites suggested by MS.The results of clicking on those "smart tags" will be MS friendly (bought and paid for) sites.

nuclei is showing you how to nip this misleading and monopolizing component in the bud.

ignore this stuff at your own peril.

love,
tit

boneprone 08-17-2001 03:15 AM

Big Thumbs up to you and percoders!
This is good info. I was hand pasting the fucking meta tag in all my pages one by one..

This would have made my life easier!

Great Post!

I take back all those things I ever said about ya nuclei.

And That's The Bottom Line Cause Boneprone Said So.

This smart tag issue shows just how bad monopoly is -- A monopolist can fuck people around. I find it similar to communism, where the state could push things on pepole at will.

MS isn't yet a full-fledged monopolist, but the situation is bad enough as it is. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/frown.gif

CDSmith 08-17-2001 05:52 AM

Okay, I downloaded the add_tag script, and opened the file....now what??

In the file it say the following: (I've replaced all ">"'s with { and }'s)

HOW TO USE SCRIPT
# --------------------------------------------------------
#
# ./add_tag.pl {starting directory}
#
# Example: ./add_tag.pl /home/username/web
#
# The above example would scan all files in /home/username/web
# including recursing directories and scanning files in them
# for the smart tag prevention tag. If its found, nothing happens.
# if it is not found, this script adds it automatically for you.

Okay, great. Now what? It says nothing about how to ACTUALLY physically USE the script! This is an area of webmastering that I know very little (if anything) about, so for me and also a lot of newbs that might also not know, what the hell do we do with this thing?

NO NO NO and NO.

Microsoft has stated that due to overwhelming outcry, they will not be enabling the smart tags in the upcoming IE 6 web browser.

The "smart tags" that will be enabled are a different technology used in Microsoft Office XP. If you are expecting a lot of people browsing your website using MIcrosoft Word, then we need to have a talk... http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/biggrin.gif

It won't hurt to put those tags on your pages, but it's totally unecessary from a browser point of view.

The Seriousness of the Threat

Microsoft, apparently to allay the fears of webmasters across the globe, announced that the new Smart Tag technology would be removed from Windows XP (the up-and-coming uber-OS soon to be released).

Most people are spreading this news to tell everyone that the threat is gone. I wish it were so.

What most people don't know is that Office XP already supports Smart Tags. Anyone that has Office XP installed can see the tags now. As this new version of Office gets wider and wider acceptance, the seriousness of this threat will increase. Further, no one knows if IE 6.0 will recognize the tags independent of Office XP. If it does, the s$%* will hit the proverbial fan

this deserves to be posted, and this thread deserves to be bumped.

Why am I waiting nearly a week and my above question isn't getting answered? Was my question THAT stupid?

Do I just ftp the text file up to my servers in ASC II mode? If so, why can't it just SAY that on the instructions so morons like me can understand what to do?

I wonder sometimes if I'm the stupid one or if the brainiacs who write these big fancey-ass scripts are, for forgetting what it's like to be a beginner regarding this stuff.

CDSmith,

sorry was in Virginia all weekend with super limited net access (laptop modem fried and couldnt find a damn store with one in hickstown, USA).

upload the script in ascii mode and chmod 755

then follow the directions in the script.

zipE 08-21-2001 09:08 PM

personally im not worrying about this . can you really see microsoft putting tags next to "hardcore pussy fucking" ? thats all thats on most of our sites . And my stats show that i have had 1 visitor with xp out of 4 million . Im leaving it to the xp owner to sort it out .

HQ 08-21-2001 11:53 PM

well i can see someone buying 'nude' and simple terms like that.

can any1 show me a real screenshot of these tags??? perhaps using my own sites??? are they in use at all yet???

Thricedead 08-22-2001 01:17 AM

Anyone here reckon M$ won't use this technology? If not in the next browser upgrade, then a later one?
I started adding this code to my pages last week http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/smile.gif

Okay, if so then my next question would be for the freehosts:
If chmod-ing is required, are the freehosts going to look after this for the webmasters that have sites located on their servers?

The people wanna know.

this is half bump and half repeat...

can any1 show me a screenshot of these tags in use? (perhaps using my own sites?)

Lord Assmore 08-22-2001 10:33 PM

HQ, when I visited microsoft.com some time ago to get more info about these stupid smart tags, they had at least one screen shot. Try there.

Kimmykim 08-22-2001 11:03 PM

Funny thing isn't going to be whether or not Microsoft makes use of any tags in any upcoming version by default.

More likely who will be laughing when the same scripters that brought you the auto homepage and the favorites and search mods figure out how to activate the tags AND insert their own shit into the ads.

Amputate Your Head 08-23-2001 12:04 AM

"The smart tag service in Internet Explorer 6 is available on the following operating systems:

Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Microsoft Windows 2000

To turn on smart tags for the operating systems in the preceding list, click Internet Options on the Tools menu, click the Advanced tab, and then click to select the Enable smart tags check box.

Smart tags allow you to find additional information about certain words and phrases that appear on a Web page. When you see a word or phrase underlined with a purple dotted line, you can place your mouse pointer over that word or phrase, and then a list of links to more information about the item is displayed. To view additional information, click the link, and then another browser windows opens displaying that information."
