The Shawshank Redemption - Tenth Anniversary Edition - DVD

Is this one of the greatest films ever made? Did it move you as much as it moved me, for instance? I thought it was fantastic.

Thats why I am going to go out and get it......

Great review of it at:

My feeling is the ending to movies makes or breaks them and the ending, actually the climax in this movie, makes this movie a classic.

Rantan 10-18-2004 09:25 AM

i wouldn't say greatest, but it was an awesome movie...

xclusive 10-18-2004 09:32 AM

well enough ppl feel strongly enough about it to make it the #3 all time favorite movie, behind "The Godfather" and "LOTR: the Return of the King" (imdb.com)

and when GFY folks list, in many threads, their favorite movies, it is listed very often by varying members. it was one of those movies that did poorly in the theatre but when it hit video, it became a collossus............everyone i know loves this film.

LiveDose 10-18-2004 09:35 AM

That is an awesome movie...:thumbsup

Hate Tim Robbins but love the movie.

What's special about this DVD over the regular one?

this a review from filmhobbit.com on the special features:

"The Shawshank Redemption has been available previously on DVD, albeit in a bare bones release. For the tenth anniversary of the little-film-that-could, the movie finally gets the treatment it deserves, from behind the scenes featurettes, to the ever so important commentary track.

Be aware, the tenth anniversary release is available in two different forms: just the two disc set by itself, or in a Collector?s Box set. The Collector?s Box set holds nothing different on the discs, but includes the movie?s soundtrack on CD and a book that looks at the film from a more ?critical report? point of view. This is no typical small, ten-page book though, it?s a full report on the movie including production pictures and interviews. The authors obviously did their homework on the movie, and while it?s not the most interesting read throughout, it is interesting to view the movie through such a critical eye. If you like the movie?s soundtrack though, that alone is what?s worth the price of the set - to have both the film and soundtrack in the same box. Regardless of which version you purchase, the two disc set remains the same.

The most interesting part of the DVD is the one thing that?s almost expected from any DVD release these days - the commentary track. Frank Darabont announces at the beginning that this is his first commentary track and asks us to take it easy on him. Well, I?m not going to take it easy. Darabont?s insightful views on his directorial debut grab you and keep you listening to the commentary long after you might usually turn a commentary track off. It?s not unusual to only listen to a sample of a commentary track when reviewing a DVD, listening long enough to get a feel for what the ?flavor? of the track is. Darabont?s commentary held me through the entire film, and then I wanted to go back and listen to it again. I wanted to hear more of what the man had to say about making this film."

Definately one of my top 10, possibly top 5, movies of all time.

arial 10-18-2004 10:54 AM

Funny how easy Hollywood can make people buy the same DVD over and over again. :1orglaugh :2 cents:

Absolutely one of the best films ever made. Completely moving, and one of the rare films that manages to portray true male friendship without reducing it to cliches.

:thumbsup

Definitely my #1 movie of all time.

With consideration; I've seen One flew over the CooKoo's Nest, Memento, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, The Usual Suspects, Reso. Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Taxi Driver, Lock Stock/smoking, Trainspotting, Godfather, etc etc etc ---- List of classics I've seen is endless.

Point being, I'm not some run of the mill, watch whatever is advertised the most, movie go-er. I watch any and all acclaimed movies. Be it from the 60's, or modern day classics.

Withstanding the above, I can say without a doubt - The Shawshank Redemption has always been my standalone favorite.

:thumbsup

Bansheelinks 10-18-2004 11:04 AM

Maybe I'll have to watch it soon as its one of the best movies ever made about hope.........and my hope is beginning to wane regarding the election..........my hope needs a boost regarding a democrat win and a bush loss

Bigjohn 10-18-2004 11:11 AM

I've watched this movie at least a dozen times and won't be surprised if I watch it at least a dozen more! Great movie :thumbsup

Bansheelinks 10-18-2004 11:15 AM

I guess the 10th Anniv. edition boxset comes with the soundtrack.......which I think is incredible. Funny how the great movies of our time have incredible soundtracks, isn't it, like Shawshank, LOTR movies, Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction and on and on.......

....a great soundtrack can raise a xcellent movie to even greater heights and emotional involvement

RuthXtremePay 10-18-2004 12:05 PM

I loved this movie :thumbsup

It's a great movie, but I couldn't stand to watch it yet again, considering I have sat through it at least a half dozen times already.

Shawshank is an amazing Movie!!!!! I honestly never get tired of it! In my opinion it is one of the best movies ever to hit the big screen.

In addition, it is Stephen Kings best film adaptation!

Film Trivia:
SR was shot at the Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, right after they closed it down!

Other Films that were shot there include:
Tango & Cash
Air Force One
God Smack Video of "Awake"

They are re-releasing the film in Theaters as well. I can't wait to see this on the big screen - especially the helicopter shoots over the prison - should be awesome. One of my favourite films and definitely deservent of all the acclaim it has been getting lately.
