Anyone buy one of the cheap plasmas?

Right now you can get a 42 inch plasma for $2,999 Canadian, no tax.

From what I understand all these cheap ones that you see at places like Costco and Futureshop for about 3K are basically rebadged Samsungs.

Some of the other names they are marketed under are Prima, Akia, Advent.

Are these things junk or decent as a spare TV?

They are ok - but they do not support HDTV. That's why they are so cheap.

EscortBiz 10-17-2004 07:03 PM

gateway has em all the time at 2700

evildick 10-17-2004 07:05 PM

Ya, I see most of them only do 480P.

They actually had a HD Sony on sale at Futureshop last week for $3499, but I missed the sale. Now it's back up to $4500.

Prima, Akia, Advent

These are JUNK. Watch a movie that is VERY dark and you will see what I mean.

OK, that is what I wanted to know. It is impossible to tell in the stores because of the poor lighting and the idiots that don't know how to set them up.

I'm thinking of buying one on Xmas....

Those cheap plasmas have a 852 x 480 resolution and when you look at them side by side with one with 1024 x 768 or better you can really see the difference. The pixels on the cheap ones look gigantic.

detoxed 10-17-2004 07:41 PM

You can get Sony for less than $4k

kenny 10-17-2004 07:43 PM

They will all be under $2000 next year at this time.

kenny 10-17-2004 07:48 PM

Four years later they were free with service :winkwink:

Cellphones thats another good one.

Sprint PCS camera phone $600..

That's actually the LCD they are selling for $2299. (only 30 inches) I haven't really looked at the LCD's because they are too expensive for anything in a half decent size.

I wouldn't buy anything from a link without seeing it side by side with other sets. What brand is that anyways? The only links on Google are their own sites.
The US version:
