so what's the verdict on SP2

Is it safe to download yet, did they fix all the bugs?

xclusive 10-15-2004 08:55 PM

not sure but when I first downloaded it my system crashed hard...

garce 10-15-2004 08:57 PM

I'm too afraid to try again.

Freakster 10-15-2004 08:58 PM

it's shit that takes over your computer

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-15-2004 08:58 PM

SP2 is very stable for my network of 5 stations in my home and seems to be working fine with the companies I consult.

I highly reccomend SP2.

BUT!

If you do video work some applications will bug out with SP2.
Which do have HOTFIXES for the most part now.

Gynecologist 10-15-2004 08:59 PM

I ordered the CD and have had zero problems.

uchase/webpry 10-15-2004 09:03 PM

... I still have one PC, did the SP2 update yesterday, no probs.

gornyhuy 10-15-2004 09:31 PM

I'm too paranoid to do it. I have the damn windows update reminder nagging me everytime I boot up.

JSA Matt 10-15-2004 09:33 PM

I have not had to run a single spyware or anti-virus software since installing SP2 and have had a total of 0 problems. However, you must be literate to install a service pack successfully.

Spunky 10-15-2004 09:35 PM

It gave me blue screen the first time it was released but tried again last month and it works great now

instances of what?

DX 10-15-2004 09:40 PM

No problems.

KRL 10-15-2004 09:41 PM

According to the latest stats, 70% have no problems after installation, 30% have some problems.

Out of the 30%, 10% (1/3rd) have severe problems, 1% get major problems resulting in blue screens and are unable to boot up windows even in safe mode.

So the odds are you won't have problems, but if you do they can really create a mess.

TurboTrucker 10-15-2004 09:53 PM

Fuck it, my computer works fine without it.

Ya but hackers or trojans ,spyware gets in easier without it

tonkagunner 10-15-2004 10:27 PM

After installing I now have a picture of bill gates on my computer that says "I own you!"

bdld 10-15-2004 11:35 PM

works marvelously.

woj 10-15-2004 11:40 PM

I have been using it since it came out, no problems at all... :thumbsup

TheJimmy 10-15-2004 11:43 PM

I gave it up for Lent...

:winkwink: :thumbsup

Ron Bennett 10-15-2004 11:46 PM

SP2 itself seems fine overall, but I'm noticing weird behavior lately ...

1 . My modem no longer obtains its IP address automatically (have since hardcoded the numbers in to get it working) - dhcp stopped working the other day - any ideas? ... disabled firewall and hoping eventually dhcp starts working again.

2. Occasionally get blue screens on bootup - errors reference hardware configuration ... likely a driver / startup program compatibility problem of some sort.

Perhaps the Webstar 100/200 modem driver isn't fully compatible with SP 2 ... and/or something else ... anyways, every patch since XP2 seems to be making my entire computer less stable ... not sure how many more patches my PC can take before it just dies.

Ron

tical 10-15-2004 11:47 PM

if you're gonna install this make sure you update your bios first, if you have an old incompatible bios you wont even be able to boot into safe mode

Ron Bennett 10-16-2004 12:34 AM

Think I found the problem ...

Errors When Uninstalling Norton AntiVirus Software
http://www.bl.com/moshe/text/quiddit...on_errors.html

I uninstalled Norton Antivirus the other day and it turns it Norton doesn't uninstall completely - it leaves in some registry entries that prevent DHCP from functioning properly.

Big relief ... could also explain the blue screens I've been occasionally getting at startup.

Now I can back to work :)

Ron

Tipsy 10-16-2004 04:56 AM

No real problems here and very stable but...if you use IE it's now slower than ever.

sirrobin 10-16-2004 07:25 AM

Stay away if you have a RAID setup

Basic_man 10-16-2004 07:27 AM

It's fuckin' suck big time! Dont install it or die ! :321GFY

SMG 10-16-2004 07:28 AM

Same here and I don't know what to do.

Especially sicne there can be a crucial update in a few days and it probably won't let me download only that crucial update without downloading SP2.

haha that's funny because I have a MSI mobo and the last time I tried updating my bios it made me start blue screening. Ended up having to reformat to fix it, because it somehow screwed up windows.

bangman 10-16-2004 09:06 AM

I'm still too afraid to install it. :helpme

loverboy 10-16-2004 09:14 AM

don't even try to install it. SP1 still works well with me and use Firefox :thumbsup

mardigras 10-16-2004 09:25 AM

I waited until it was in Windows Update a couple of weeks to install it. My DSL wouldn't connect the next day. I did System Restore then reinstalled sp2 and haven't had any problems since.

AlxCds 10-16-2004 06:33 PM

no problem here after upgrading my bios.

Morgan 10-16-2004 06:50 PM

dont do it if you edit video

FlyingIguana 10-16-2004 06:56 PM

nothing happened to my pc. my roommate lost use of her dsl for a bit, but its working fine now.

JoeA 10-16-2004 07:01 PM

I was also a blue screen recipient and I ain't gonna touch SP2 until it's necessary..

Also as I use Pinnacle Studio 9 that's another reason not to install it. Microcrap even have a page on line that tells you the programmes SP2 can and will fuck up. It was posted here originally but I lost it when I had to re-format after the first SP2 install.. DUH

Found it in time to edit this post:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884130

It lists programmes that will be affected...

dubious media 10-16-2004 07:17 PM

i love it. it stops you fuckers from giving me popups.

crockett 10-16-2004 08:01 PM

speaking of updates..

I just did the too lastest updates from microsucks and now my FireFox is fucked up anyone else had this same issue?

William-Xfactor 10-16-2004 08:01 PM

No way that shit is going anywhere near my main pc

Make sure you have a good disc image backup of your system, you may need it.

he made quite a long post bashing lens :)

Odin88 10-17-2004 03:07 AM

70% doesn't sound too good to me. I think I'll wait until that number is closer to 100. I can't believe they actually released a patch with this many errors. What did they do, test it on one PC and than give it a go ahead? Fuck me, it isn't even if it is holes being uncovered, it is totally fucking up computers from the minute they install it. Fucking insane, I won't touch it until those numbers are much much better.
