I prefer Maya, Vue d'esprit and ZBrush but 3DS Max is powerful too.

eh, i wish i had the time to learn those apps. I would fucking own. For now Ill stick to pen and paper, and photoshop.
Ive been hunting down modelers for the past few months to work on a game mod for Far Cry Ive been dev'ing/.... Any modelers that use max or maya and wanna work on a mod that will have drama like gta vice city mixed into a tactical military/urban-ops fps, hit me uppp: someone AT unknownorigin.com Ive got 5 modelrs already, could use a lot more. |
3DS Max was always was too less intuitive in my opinion, 6 years ago they even wanted more than 10k for their educational version, never a big supporters of newcommers.
I recomment you to try out Maya or ZBrush, I really like them, there is also good educational stuff avaible. Check out: http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/ |

from what i've been reading in the last few weeks from articles and interviews, this is the process that most games are actually taken under by the major/mainstream game companies. new creation side projects that develop a huge buzz in the underground gamer world until they are bought out or partnered with the creative development staff of these companies for full development. could be off but just what i've digested thus far. The best reading on 3d studio max comes from New Riders. Their books are simply excellent.
If you are interested in 3d and want to see what it's all about, then check out http://www.blender3d.com/ which is a free 3d app for ALL platforms. It is free to download and quite powerful. It would potentially save you a shitload of cash before deciding to splash out on 3d studio max. |

But didn't the version 6 come out couple of month ago? |
Damn, I spent almost a year learning Studio Max back when I was hoping to pursue a career in gaming. I decided as much as I enjoyed art it made me rely too much on other people.
Originally 3DMax was the choice of game developers, but it is shifting over to Maya. New game engine such as the one used for Doom 3 rely heavily on bump mapping and other new technology which mean you basically have to make a high-resolution model (just like in 3D animated movies.) 3DMax sucks for high-poly organic modelling. Some people think that 3D art is "cheating" because "the computer does all the work." Let me tell you, I've painted, sculpted, drawn, etc. 3D modelling is by far the hardest of them all. Photoshop is like a coloring book compared to this shit. (If you are really going for the photo-realistic look, especially with people.) Now, if you just want to dabble in it without putting in all the work, try a program like Poser. Thats just barbie dolls. |

It wont be a total 'mans' game tho. We plan on having female characters you can use for MP... and melee weapons like using just your hands (i.e., Doom 3)... LOts of women will get a kick out of being a woman in an online fps and knocking a guy the fuck out with some combo punches ;) Heres our site: http://hard.fraggers.com - mod is called "HARD". lol Deving a mod is fucking hard tho. First was the matter of recruiting people (that arent being paid obviously)... then its a matter of getting them to work on projects in a timely fashion and string everything together, etc. The first guy I recruited for modeling was fucking awesome - his specialty was modeling nude women and weapons (great combo, eh?) - but then his ex-wife sent him to jail (for god knows what) so now I dont have any good character modelers. Since then I recruited 5 more modelers and a handful of coders (only 2 are experienced in the language that the game uses, the others are learning). Its a time consuming process but its pretty fun tho. Since its a free mod I dont have to worry about publishers telling me what to do / not to do... and hopefully if the game gets really popular they may wanna capitalize on it - even tho if its rated X or some shit. :P |
