Learning new languages

Anyone got any special techniques for this that actually work?
What works really well for me with somewhat familiar languages is just reading a few books in the language in question (with the help of a dictionary ofcourse).

As an adult it is much harder to learn a new language. You might want to take a few classes and then visit a country where it is spoken.

talking to someone in that language might help.

I am learning Chinese at the moment and I have a bad memory so it just comes down to lots of repetition.

First I learn the definition of a new word.
Then I learn how to say it with the correct tones.
They I learn what it looks like in Chinese characters.
Then I learn to write it in Chinese characters.

There are like 30,000 Chinese characters.

I have 80 done so far, only 2000 more to be considered basically literate. :glugglug

Pimsleur is correct. They make tapes for just about every language you can imagine.

I'd have to agree.
