Does Pornography Cause Rape ?

"It?s no secret that the United States of America is the number one country in the world for crime and pornography. A lot of speculation is occurring whether or not pornography is the causation of rape.

Diana Russell believes whole heartily that pornography IS the answer to rape. She claims that pornography shows that women are susceptible and can lead men on by thinking that rape is okay. I would love to know how Mrs. Russell figures that pornography is the primary source for molestation. Obviously, she hasn?t seen much of pornography.

Pornography is the material, whether it be pictures, novels, or movies, that shows sexual encounters with people. The porno industry has boosted its numbers close to a billion dollars, and that was in the United States alone. What makes Mrs. Russell?s argument so ludicrous is the fact that she says that ALL pornography leads to rape. How does a woman willing to perform fellatio to a man an act of rape? How does a man performing cunnilingus on a woman an act of rape?

Last I checked, rape was an act of violence; I seriously doubt that any man is going to point a gun to a woman?s head and say ?Let me perform cunnilingus on you!? Of course, I would understand if Mrs. Russell would have said violent pornography. Violent pornography usually revolves around men overpowering women, or women overpowering men, or women overpowering women for that matter. Usually violent pornography has a lot of whips and chains, and a lot of nipple tortures and other clamps that are attached to any other orifices.

But can we really say that even violent pornography causes rape? Ted Bundy would say yes, but I say no. Want proof? Alright, let?s look at Japan. Japanese pornography is 80% violent, even their animation films have some sort of alien with ten thousand tentacles all forcing themselves inside a scared and terrified woman. But here is the kicker, Japan only has twenty-two hundred (2200) rapes in a single year. Want to know how many are in the United States? Ninety-thousand (90,000) in one year.

I hope Mrs. Russell reads this message, because her feminist gibberish is ridiculous, because pornography does not promote rape, nor does it try to. I remember reading where a couple did film a porno where three hulking guys perform an act of rape to a young woman. The company was sued and the film was ousted. What is so bizarre is that a lot of adult movie stars were the ones that protested against this particular film. See, even porn stars take responsibility for humanity.

I wear one. It's stylish. Keeps evil thoughts out of my head too.

In some cases porn probably does cause someone to rape.

In some cases watching a violent movie will cause someone to kill.

In some cases watching a commercial will cause someone to purchase something.

Face it, the world would be a much safer place to live if we went to work, came home, read books (not on the censored list) and talked to our wives.

I love my wife, but when THAT'S the most entertainment life is willing to offer, I'll pass.

Kimmykim 10-13-2004 02:48 PM

Why don't they ever write articles about how porn causes people to have better sex? Geez.

arg 10-13-2004 02:48 PM

There are many counter-examples of countries with more liberal pornography distribution yet far less rape. It's like trying to pin the US murder rate on a single factor, like people blame rock music, or rap music, or video games, or violent movies, or no-fault divorces, or no-wait handgun purchases, or racial integration, or whatever they personally oppose.

These crime rates simply aren't attributable to any one factor. Usually a comparison between US and Canadian culture can disprove overt correlations, because Canadian culture is exposed to many similar factors (similiar TV, movies, games, porn, etc.) but has far lower crime rates.

I think if anything it prevents it.. It gives some people a vent, they jerk it rather then get so frustrated that they need to go out and take someones innocense...

Paul Waters 10-13-2004 03:13 PM

Watching porn never made me rape anyone.

In fact, knowing I could go home to jerk off, while watching porn, always gave me better self control.

:2 cents:

im not certain but i think in other countries without the use of multimedia for porn etc...that rape is much higher.

like how it is actually ok to rape some girls if they wear mini skirts..where was that one again?

where the bus drivers union informed all riders that females wearing mini skirts would be raped....lol

ah...i love the religious freaks

warlock5 10-13-2004 03:18 PM

Oh yes, where the rape victims are stoned to death rather than the rapists.

Indeed..
That statement is B/S [original one] everyone blaims wrongdoings on media, whether it be games, books or t.v.. it's just so much easier than blaiming the parents.

Mike Okitch 10-13-2004 05:44 PM

I disagree that porn=rape.

Also alcohol=assault

water=drowning

It's all about moderation.

Japan has some of the freakiest porn in the world. And I would challenge any so called "expert" to prove me that rape in Japan is worse.

WarChild 10-13-2004 05:46 PM

Isn't rape supposed to be more about power than sex?

Good point

Japan has the most violent media- from games, to cinema, right down to our market- porn... and guess what- they have one of the lowest crime ratios in the world.

Any coincidence that these numbers dropped about the same time the internet was getting a strong foothold? The link above seems to say a few things in my mind(however feeble it may be) :)

We maybe #1 for rape worldwide as of 1999, but alot of countries stone the rapee for not marrying their rapist, so who is counting what?

Per capita though tells a different story(we are at #9 as of 1999--

pornguy 10-13-2004 06:28 PM

One of the things that causes rape is the fact that they are trying to stop us from being sexually open. I am willing the bet thet the number of rapes is far lower in Europe than in the US.

To say that America has high crime and lots of porn then try to connect the two after the fact is the logical fallacy of Post Hoc Ergo Prompter Hoc, also known as the fallacy of False Cause. Because the two exist at the same time does not necessarily mean they are related in almost any way.

High crime is due to our national character, which contains a great deal of fear. I don't know that since we're afraid of a lot of things that it causes us to be criminals, but I suspec that they are related.

The high level of porn is easliy tracable to our puritanical roots. Americans have been repressing our sexuality for longer then our country has existed. When you try to repress a natural instinct, it's going to come out one way or another. If we thought eating was sinful, instead of porn we'd have videos of girls eating Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches.

Those don't necessarily follow. An individual who is genetically predisposed to being non-violent is not going to become violent after watching a violent movie, but a genetically violently predisposed individual might, but that individual was going to pretty much no matter what anyway.

Porn is not the problem, Hollywood is.

When was the last time you've seen a rape video on the net?
When was the last time you've seen a rape scene on TV?

Duh.

I totally agree.

I also always believed that releasing your mojo on porn will calm you the fuck down and keep you away from doing stupid stuff, ie. rape. works for me.

wasn't Monster the name of that movie that recently came out with Charlise Theron? wow that shit was HARSH...

have never seen a rape vid online, only a rare instance of someone spamming for a rape (fantasy?) site onetime....nothing horribly graphic (images) in the spam though, not nearly as much as was in that Monster movie...

Very true, Hollywood and TV sells more scenes to more people than porn ever did.

The people that accuse us of these things are doing so to show the uneducated that we are the problem.

Problem with these peoples arguement is when you look at these figures you see they are lying. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_rap_cap

Look where Holland, Germany and Denmark are. Countries with very liberal laws to porn.

Maybe the anser is more porn not less, to protect women.
