http://www.pocketsurfer.net/

what do you think? i actually might pick one up. i'm really not into cellphones that can browse the web. however this is something small i could bring around with me when i don't want to lug a laptop around, but need access to the web.

Ice 10-08-2004 08:12 PM

can you buy me one too? :) :glugglug

WickedVenus 10-08-2004 08:14 PM

Those are pretty cool!!!

I'm personally a fan of the Blackberry's and Rogers offers good rates for national coverage.

Actually I have service directly with Research In Motion over their own network through their friends and employee's plan so I'm not really on Roger's network.

From what I remember though, Rogers charges $40/month for 1MB plan and $60/month for unlimited. I'm not sure if there's any other carriers in Canada other than Rogers actually.

what do you mean?

as for this pocket surfer, it looks pretty cool. important things to find out would be if it supports javascript and flash.

a downside is that it has no pop3 email support.

the device itself has a pretty good price, although there doesn't seem to be any mention of potential access fees.

i'm quite fond of my hiptop, personally. although 640x240 would definetly be nicer than 320x240.

yeah, decent keyboard, large screen. it supports flash, video (although they say it can't handle much video - no suprise), javascript, secure http, etc. 12.95 per month + whatever you are paying for your cellphone plan.

goes on sale next month here in Canada.

Hey WG I'm curious - how did you manage that, if not a secret? :)

I'm working for them right now, so I have a BB (how did I ever live without one?) but since my term thing ends in a year - is there a way to keep like a discounted subscription or something?

Just to check stats and CNN news. The keyboard on it is really cool, I can probably type about 30-40 words/min on it (compared to 60 on a real keyboard) and it weighs about the same as a cell phone.

if i didn't have my hiptop, and i had a bluetooth phone, i'd definetly get it.

I know Jim Ballsilie :)
http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/bulletin/2004/jan/20tu.html It's great knowing a billionaire at times. Talk to your manager, they offer it free between semesters if you plan on working at RIM again.

Well the thing is that I'm from UofT and we don't have a semestered co-op.. it's a one time thing lasting a year.

I'm telling ya though, it's a conspiracy.
They get all their coops addicted on Blackberries so they'd buy them when they are done with the company. I know I will, I can't live without the blasted thing now. :glugglug

The enterprise co-op thing looks awesome by the way. Good job getting it.. I wish we had something like that at UofT

Vitasoy 10-08-2004 10:03 PM

I gotta love nifty gadgets. Very cool :D

One year coop term? Hmmm, interesting. You just started a while ago? We should meet up sometime in Waterloo, my offices are actually really close by RIM's corporate HQ just off King/Columbia.

Nice, I used to live in one of the apartment buildings near there (Rothman's on Albert street) when I was going to UW. Either way, email me up when you get a chance, gfy [at] wired2000 [dot] com and mention this thread so I don't think its spam :)
