wireless

Has anyone got any cool ideas for wireless setups?

Explicit 10-08-2004 05:32 AM

I want to build a pc in the glovebox of my jeep and place a 5inch lcd where ther stereo was, have it all hooked up to the speakers, and have the cellphone internet connection through verizon... if this is what you mean by a wireless idea.

justsexxx 10-08-2004 05:32 AM

Depends on your needs of course.

But I''m happy with my LINKSYS WRT54G. My desktop is connected to it by WIRE, and my laptop WIRELESS with a linksys card as well.

I can really go far outside and still use it.

Also the security is great, (update your windows xp/2000 to use it). It has WPA+AES, even better then WEP128. Turn OFF broadcast, make your SSID name difficult, and turn ON mac filtering. This way you will be pretty safe:-) IMO very safe. Especially when you have a neighbour(like me) who has his connection WIDE OPEN. So when some kids wants to play they pick him:-)

tsss youve got the same setup as i have :) bout security seen that prg last week on dutch tv bout spotting open wifi connections ? ouch 2 hrs and they had like 25 could browse everything... SO important to get a safe SSID...

DVTimes 10-08-2004 05:37 AM

WiFi or Bluetooth.

One thought I had was to set up some sort of mini internet.

The thought being to transmit as far as I can to other pcs. And have films music (all licensed and legal), and others do the same.

A sort of TV but delivered by wi fi.

Yeah it is old. I mean it's the same like leaving your wallet in your car, and leave the windows open, and leave a note will be back at 5pm :)

I also tested it once, I drove the car and my GF looked at netstubmler. After 20 minutes we had around 40!! open networks found. And 10 with SSID ON(but they DID use some security)

Oh well, I guess this will change when ppl get more knowlegde.

BTW what is your icq?

bluetooth is like 10 meters so that wont work, wifi with an external antenna could work, i know a guy who has that in an appt building, chipped in 100 a month for a fast inet connection and a lotta ppl can enjoy it plus movies yeah

Another thought is to transmit to Bluetooth phones. Maybe send out adverts and so on.

boosters up to 100mW are ok in EU above that you need a license

It wouldnt be so much for watching any videos or gaming and the like. I have a good 60gigs of music that would be nice to have in my ride. Mapquest is the only other perk that makes me want to do it :P

DutchTeenCash 10-08-2004 05:44 AM

if you wanna try make sure you dont have these within reach :

large metal plates
leaking microwave ovens
other accesspoints (use 3 channels space)
BT
DECT stuff
wireless cameras etc

One idea I had was to have a pc set up with Bluetooth. This would be placed so that people could be in the area, and get text messages from it, say the latest news.

Just wondered if there was any set up like this at the moment.

DVTimes 10-08-2004 05:48 AM

with Bluetooth now in more and more phones, it seems like there is great possibilities.

FedEx and Bluetooth wireless technology
FedEx, well known as efficiency experts, further streamlined their packaging delivery and logistics operations in 2003 by equipping FedEx delivery drivers with Bluetooth enabled handheld computers, printers and bar code scanners. Wirelessly enabling the FedEx delivery man is an exercise in efficiency, productivity and cost reduction. For FedEx, Bluetooth wireless technology was an obvious choice.
Coca Cola and Bluetooth wireless technology
In Australia, a Coca Cola bottling company equipped field sales and marketing staff with Bluetooth enabled IBM ThinkPads and accompanying Bluetooth enabled phones. This product combination allowed employees to be connected to Internet, company network, e-mail and client information anywhere, anytime. The ThinkPad, connecting via Bluetooth wireless technology to the mobile phone's GPRS data network allowed for the full function of a laptop computer with the versatility of a high speed mobile data network. Efficiency, productivity, bottom line.
Other Innovative Bluetooth Business Uses
It doesn't stop at computers, mobile phones and handheld computers. Commercial vehicles are now installing Bluetooth systems for driver communications, hands free calling and data capture. Hospitals are employing the use of wireless pulse oximeters - which reduces the likelihood of a patient accidentally removing the pulse receiver. The city of Oslo, Norway is using Bluetooth sensor devices and communications equipment to monitor critical water pumping stations. A zoo park in Denmark is using Bluetooth wireless technology to track the location of each child in the zoo to ensure that parents can pin-point their location in the park at all times while giving the children the freedom to explore.

Just let it running, and start driving. At some poit it will find accespoints. (the green spots) when it's yellow you are coming close etc.

Look if it's OPEN, when it is, simple close netstumbler and let XP connect to this location.

Could you just go up to any hotspot and make calls with it free?

TheSaint 10-08-2004 06:18 AM

When I was vacationing this summer we rented a house in Orlando for a week. At first, I was griping because I was going to have to use my cell phone dialup all week (about 40K conenction). On the second night though I noticed a very weak wi-fi connection.

I walked around the whole house with my laptop, and couldn't find it. Then I walked around the outside of the house and finally found that in the corner of the pool area I had an excellent wi-fi connection.

Turned out the idiot next door had a wide open wi-fi router, and for the next 7 days I worked out by the pool about an hour a day with a free 200K connection. :glugglug

its just a voip phone, but youd need a sip server on the other end, the box that connects the ip stuff to the tel line so if youre lucky yes but mostly no

google for sip server with your area see if some hotspots got any setup
