Having the webserver at home
I have been playing with the idea of having a webserver at home. What kind of outgoing connection should be needed for that? Lets say for a "normal" site with pictures and maybe 1000 visitors/day...?

Most ISPs for broadband connections such as cable and DSL dissalow having servers on their connection. Now for 2000 visitors, why don't you just buy webspace or use a free host. That is not that much. Depending on how many pics your visitors look at you'll need a 512k-1Mbit connection (but you're looking at routers and having stable server as well). In my opinion your should stick to proffesional webhosting. it's not worth the hassle doing it yourself.

You would need atleast a T1, which you could get for 300-400 month.

Don't do it. I have a T1 line and run a server here, but no way I would use it for a porn site. It's only for my admin domains. Get a good paid host that is set up to handle the bandwidth. Besides, T1 is a corporate grade line. It'll cost you upwards of $3g to have it installed, and most fees run in the neighborhood of $1100 a month. (unless they've gone down, I haven't priced them lately.) You'll get much better value for your buck by using either free or paid hosts in actual NOCs.

Be careful when considering this...
1. ADSL/CABLE as said, most providers don't allow servers. And the circuit is very, very unreliable. 2. LEASED LINE (T1/T3 for home use) : as said, stick with a paid host, because : a. major hosting companies have multiple circuits to ensure redundancy. If circuit A drops, B and C will keep the business going; b. you'll need a UPS and power generator to survive power outages; c. if you're planning to install more machines, your temperature may run out of control. Airco needed; d. If you have a T1 line, your max. upstream is 1.5Mbps. Meaning your uploads won't go any faster. Hosting companies have circuits up to 155Mbps or higher. Meaning your upload speed can boost to the max. of your server speed when needed. Useful at peak moments; e. You probably have no contract with a hardware vendor. Hosting companies have them, which makes the servers etc a lot cheaper. Consider and reconsider. Many have tried this, but I would be very careful if uptime is important... ------------------ http://www.sponsorreport.com - Maximize your Cash using the Smart Method ! |
there is alot more goings with paid hosting
then just a server and a connection to the net,,, but then again with some of these so called hosting companies i wouldn't doubt that most of them run these types of service ------------------ ------------ Playa icq#38147712 Got a Black site or category? Get a Black Dialer!! www.NoBSdialer.com |
DSL business accounts allow servers. Cable? Blah! It can be done on DSL but you have no burst power so a serious influx of surfers could cause probs. Real Quick! http://bbs.gofuckyourself.com/board/wink.gif

FYI Most dsl providers provide max upload speed of 128/384
