A domain like anything else in this world is only worth how much a person is willing to actually pay you for it.

Scange, there's no formula, there are lots of factors that people consider. In general, domains with type-in traffic are worth more, domains with no legal risks are worth more, domains that relate to higher-profit-margin sales/services are worth more, memorable short domains are worth more than longer complex ones (usually a factor in its type-in traffic anyway), .com > .net > .org > .info > .cx (again already reflected in type-in traffic).

And generally don't trust domain valuations from places like Afternic.

for .com

number of characters * .42

.net is *.31

This will tell you how much it's worth, to the point.

"goatse" is a perfect example of an exception to that rule of thumb. "goatse.cx" is definitely better than "goatse.com". :-)

Wow, cool on the flash of brilliance Hal, thanks! Mine isn't the best of FOBs, but some days I guess the standards are lower. :) I like the whole flash of brilliance idea, nice encouragement for people to make constructive posts.
