Why are most people such fucking idiots when it comes to politics?

It's shocking how many people don't see the difference between them wanting something to be true and something actually being true. It's as if people choose a single side and simply stop processing any unfavourable information about their side, or favourable information about any of the other sides.

People treat politics as if it were a football league... "their" team is always best, even if it isn't. Fucking pathetic.

jacked 10-06-2004 07:12 AM

most of them are under informed about what is going on making it hard for them to make there own decisions and just siding with whatever is easier for them to follow and defend :2 cents:

StuartD 10-06-2004 07:13 AM

It's all about the spin.

I could imagine that 12clicks would be the best president if only I could find a way to justify in my head all the nukes being sent everywhere.

psili 10-06-2004 07:15 AM

1. Most people are idiots regardless of the topic at hand.

2. People tend to have "beliefs" about something rather than "ideas". Beliefs are hard to change regardless if they contradict factual evidence -- this was a great premise of the flick Dogma, btw.

drctfiesta 10-06-2004 07:16 AM

If you are liberal then you are right according to GFY's fuckfaces.
If you are conservative then you are wrong according to GFY's fuckfaces.

Either way, embrace Allah and make a reservation for your 3 camels and 32 virgin twinks

Allah Ouakbarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

That really does sum it up. There's very few subjects that are black and white but a huge % if the population haven't the intelligence to stop and think before forming an opinion.

People don't realize the media has their own ideologies and they blindly follow, noone actually looks into stuff.

One should watch at least 3 different news sources if they want to get half the story:winkwink:

extreme_spaz 10-06-2004 10:30 AM

I think it boils down to once someone has decided who they are for, then whatever the side that they are against says, it is irrelevant.
I do not like/respect GWB, so basically I am sure there has to be one or two positive things someone somewhere could say about him and his term, but I don't care to hear it.

agreed, most people just follow the others and don't have own opinion or some people can't take others opinions.....:)

Rich 10-06-2004 10:42 AM

IMO it has a lot to do with the way the US media works. They make politics into a football game, you're supposed to pick your side and root for them until the end.

Hey I'm a Colts fan, if you tell me a valid reason why they're going to lose I'm not going to listen to it. If you tell me Edgerrin James fumbled 2 times in the opening week I'm going to make up an excuse and tell you your team fucking sucks. Sadly people are being trained to do the same thing with politics. Letting each side spit out their talking points is very far from being news, I don't know why the 24 hour networks are legally allowed to call themselves that.

you are the idiot the topic refers too.... if you admit that you are biased and wont look at all the information and simply make a blind decision..

I'm not a fan of Clinton but im not going to say i dont want to hear the good things he got accomplished... Because information is power... but just because i like/respect GWB i won't ignore any negatives about him.. for instance I am against him wanting to ammend the constitution to ban gay marriages.. not because im pro gay people.. but because thats not what the constitution is for...

But, keep ignoring things that dont make you smile... it obviously suits you

kane 10-06-2004 12:17 PM

I think one of the main reasons is that many people are simply sheep. They go to work, come home, eat dinner and watch TV until they go to bed. They don't watch the news or read the papers they don't ask questions. They see the president or some other politician tell them something and they belive it and don't ever look into it for themselves. Also I think it's because people want to belive things are true.
They hear or read something and then filter it through their brain and say that the information supports their view even if it doesn't but because they want to belive it does they allow themselves to see it that way.

For example the war in Iraq. Just the other day I was talking to some friends of mine about it and one friend said " we should support the president even if we don't agree with him and shouldn't question him in a time a war." I said " If we don't question him during a war doesn't that encourage him to be at war. Also, our job is pick the leaders that will do as we want them to so if the guy is doing something you don't like you should question him and if need be elect someone new."

another friend said " we couldn't wait on going into Iraq. What were we supposed to do just sit there and let them attack us again." when I pointed out that even now the bush adminstration is saying that the saddam had no connection to 9/11 and that they have no weapons and were not a threat." she was shocked and didn't belive me until I showed her the dozens of articles showing this.

I'm not meaning this a bush bashing post but those are just two examples of how people see or hear something and then never investigate it for themselves and then allow them selves to be led around like a herd animal.

I think people are smarter than we like to give them credit for, and I respect anyone who makes an effort to understand. I just think some people have a hard time articulating their thoughts and opinions. It doesn't mean they're idiots, or that they're uninformed.

.:St Ides:. 10-06-2004 12:30 PM

The real question is why are most people idiots when it comes to free thinking.

Most people do not know where they stand on many issues. They form there opinion based on TV show, Oprah, friends, and magazines. They do not know how to form a proper opinion and stick to it.

In the US a lot of the people who bitch and complain about Bush did not vote at all.

Guess what if everyone who did not vote at all that is now bitching about bush voted for gore the US would have a different president.

Before you bitch and complain about something make sure you have done everything in your power to combat it, then and only then you can open your mouth and have an opinion.

Indeed very true, take for example 80% of the ones posting here :winkwink:

Arm123 10-06-2004 01:49 PM

Most people are weak minded and are looking for somebody to lead them. There are very few true leaders in this world and even fewer 'responsible' ones.

Its human nature to want to belong to something. It makes them feel like they are special. Gives their lives meaning.

Its the same with religion. Nobody want to accept the truth and believe that they dont matter, and they insignificant. Thats part of whats wrong with the world today.

After Vietnam the goverments that waged war decided never to allow the news media un controlled access to the war zone.

The powers decided alos to buy and control the media as much as they can.

Problem is most educated people change their minds as they are fed more information, but in the US this is used against Kerry being called a Flp Flop, pity Bush did not change his mind on Iraq.

35,000 people might still be alive and a lot more not maimed for life.

People hate to admit they were wrong, takes a strong man to say, "I got it wrong, but it's not too late to change my mind"

1) Majority of people don't follow politics so they are uninformed or apathetic
2) The minority that follow politics think that you have to be in one camp or the other (a lot has to do with polarized right/left media)
3) Once set into a party line, people don't like to change. They feel it undermines their intelligence if they admit to being wrong (they think people will think they're stupid or unprincipled).
4) Many people idolize and bow to authority figures and will believe anything the authority figure "on their side" says. "The President is right, he has to be, because he's the President and our country doesn't do bad things!"

I gather from this that you never really spent any significant amount of time studying the basics of politics, and are too impatient to follows any serious sources of political news.

I know your kind well. People who hate politics simply because they don't understand it themselves, and claim it's "all the same" because they lack the skills and knowledge to see the differences. People who think "it's all bullshit anyway" is just as valid as an analysis based on the extensive study of thousands of years of political theory.

Yes, I'm arrogant. That's because unlike you, I know what the fuck I'm talking about.

I don't think its a matter of people being idiots..... as much as a matter of most of the country doesn't give a fuck.

GFY is a miniscule part of the population. If everyone thought the way most of the people here do, then the country would be one big pot field with orgy after orgy taking place (not that that would be too bad of a thing.... )
