Cable or DirecTV?

When I had cable, I never had problems, not that I have DirecTV there is always something wrong and there customer service sucks. I am usually on hold with them for about 45 minutes just to get through.

Anyone have Cable. Did it get any better from years ago?

axelcat 10-05-2004 04:22 PM

cable goes out alot I would go with dierecttv

NinjaSteve 10-05-2004 04:23 PM

I have DirecTV. It's great and I have no complaints. Also I use the tivo service. You need to get that too, it's priceless (for only $5 more a month)

WickedVenus 10-05-2004 04:23 PM

OMG I love tivo!!!! I plan on getting one soon!! I love it everytime I see the infomercials for it.

Bigjohn 10-05-2004 04:24 PM

Direct TV & Digital Cable about the same

NinjaSteve 10-05-2004 04:25 PM

Recently I gave digital cable a try testing out the two pretty much side by side. I liked the navigation and tivo features from DirecTV. The digital cable was okay, the DVR sucks ass, but the 'on demand' stuff was very cool... being able to watch something at any time without the wait.

However I still like DirecTV better. If I were to go with Digital Cable I wouldn't get their DVR service. Instead I'd buy a tivo for cable and get the lifetime subscription for $250-300.

Tivo is great how it is. If want more out if it you can do that too by hacking the shit out of it. Adding another drive, putting FTP into the Tivo to download TV shows, etc etc. I don't watch that much TV but Tivo is just that bad ass. :thumbsup

I have digital cable, no complaints. But then again, I rarely watch TV.

That's what I've got, two ReplayTVs hooked up to full digital cable. I'm liking digital cable because I've got access now to about 20 HD channels, not sure how many directv offers.

Vitasoy 10-05-2004 04:42 PM

I have both cable a sat and the same time in the past, I perfer sat cause it's more clearer... Maybe cause the cable wires are old? I have no idea. heh

lb_vee 10-05-2004 06:15 PM

I got Dish Network. The service is awesome and I havent had any *major* problems yet.

FreeFastHost 10-05-2004 06:21 PM

Digital Cable all the way.

detoxed 10-05-2004 06:26 PM

chaze 10-05-2004 06:36 PM

This may be spam but it's true :thumbsup

Where I live, we have Comcast Cable. I have the works with mine... COMPLETE cable package (every freaking movie channel) and cable internet. With Comcast you get a feature called "OnDemand" and with that you can pick a show and watch it at anytime. You can also choose movies "On Demand" and Pay Per Views are the same way. It's pretty much TiVo, but it's free and through the cable company.

Pretty freaking cool, and it doesn't cost out the ass. I haven't had any issues with my cable or internet, unless there is a tornado.

:thumbsup

They are basically the same now, both use MPEG4 compression schemes, hence the Jitter Scrambles.

I have both, and since I only use the satellite for Horse Races / NFL Sunday Ticket, I can't say much, but when it rains, it can get bad.

Digital cable can get some glitching in rain / snow storms, but not nearly as bad.

If you have Timewarner, they have a DVR service with their Digital Cable, so big ups.

i've had problems with direct tv before...i only have cable now. i miss having a menu that tells you whats on...and i hate having to flip channels!:(

Goatse 10-06-2004 04:31 AM

Cable is generally better. The dish will go out periodically if it rains or snows, and there's a serious lag when you change channels. Depending on your location, cable will generally be a lot more reliable, though perhaps they don't offer quite as many options.

Got DirectTv hooked up last monday and havent had a problem yet. Would have gone with cable, but they dont offer it yet here in the middle of this cow pasture I live in :Graucho Love the guide menu, but it took me a while to figure out how to filter out all the bullshit channels I would never watch and the ones I dont get on my plan :helpme

Semi-Retired-Dave 10-06-2004 11:02 AM

Thanks, I might have to trash my DirecTV if they don't give me a year credit on it.

macho 10-06-2004 11:13 AM

Sagitta 10-06-2004 11:20 AM

You will eventually end up with all the channels. You will get sick of picking something and realizing you don't have it.

mardigras 10-06-2004 11:48 AM

I have a 10' dish with a 4DTV receiver (traditional C & Ku-bands combined with subscriber digital) and an mpeg Free-to-Air receiver slaved to it. Downgrading to cable or a pizza dish would be slumming for me:glugglug

BiggleJones 10-06-2004 11:50 AM

I love DirecTV and Dish Network. Cable is too expensive, and I dont know if Comcast is available where you are, but they have the worst customer service I have ever dealt with....and they dont offer inDEMAND yet in LA.

BuckLover 10-06-2004 12:00 PM

Dish Network baby!:thumbsup

Lucy 10-06-2004 12:39 PM

Digital Cable:thumbsup

cfU 10-06-2004 01:17 PM

have directv w/ a series 2 directivo - kicks ass!
watch and record 2 channels same time. the quality is great, only goes out in a real
bad storms. I also get basic cable for when that happens.

:winkwink:

The Dawg 10-06-2004 02:19 PM

After having Directv for 5 years I switched to cable. Its a better deal for the $$. With directv you have to pay for every receiver per month and if you have alot of rooms in your house it adds up. No receiver = No signal. You have to pay extra for the local channels too.

I also got mad with them because they CLAIMED 1 dish could support 3 receivers... and thats not true. 2 will have all the channels & the 3rd would be missing some stations. I dont want mulitple dishes outside my house.

With cable you can still get like 78 stations without a box in the rooms nobody hangs out in much.

I know if I still had Directv during these hurricanes we would have been without TV for a while. Our cable never went out.

Plus cable offers a good deal with the High Speed Internet/Digital Cable package.

Cable. :thumbsup

Directv :321GFY

Only good thing about Directv now is Sunday Ticket. :(

dennisthemenace 10-06-2004 03:16 PM

I prefer cable. When we had Directv the freezing up during storms got annoying fast.
