Video cam help

I've got a sony digtal 8 camcorder, but im trying to watch some vid we took friday night and its like skipping on playback.

Is there a way I can clean this? Using a cleaner to clean the lens inside the cam?

Or could it just be the tape is fucked? Or the cam?

Have you tried pluging the video out into a TV or capture card? If it's just the eyepiece that should work.
