Father Ted

I didn't know channel 4 was rerunning it...top class show. Certainly the best piss take of the church I have ever seen.

Tipsy 10-04-2004 03:08 PM

Superb show. I've always wondered how well it'd travel were it to be shown on US TV.

European Lee 10-04-2004 03:09 PM

Definately a great show, just a shame about the guy passing away several years ago who played Ted he had an even more promising career ahead of him :(

Regards,

Lee

There was a station on satellite that was playing Father Ted right after Only Fools and Horses every Sunday night a couple of years ago. I caught 4 or 5 before they changed their lineup. The ones I saw were pretty funny.

mardigras 10-04-2004 03:30 PM

Cool, I just checked BBC America's website and they started running Father Ted 2 days ago:thumbsup

Hey Sarah, did you ever watch the britcom "Doctor in the House"? (about a group of medical students)
That was my first exposure to British comedy as a kid in the mid 70's. I haven't seen it for over 25 years. Would love to see some episodes again to see if it is really as funny as I remember thinking it was.

It aged very quickly. Just personal opinion though of course and others may disagree. It's also one of those shows they rarely if ever re-run in the UK even on the sat, channels that normally happily show that sort of stuff.

Yeh is funny if you get the point and the time it was made. They did re-run a few on UKGold a few months back. Check the schedules they do show it still :glugglug

There's only a bit of info about it online (no "comprehensive" fan pages that I've found). It was loosely based on a movie of the same name. Only videos I see available online are PAL/UK region.

mardigras 10-04-2004 04:09 PM

Just saw that Amazon.com has a 6 episode set but reviews said it wasn't the funniest episodes.

SlutFinder 10-04-2004 04:16 PM

looks like granada plus show it also, if you have SkyDigital

lol...early on into me living here I made the mistake of saying 'arse' around a group of my male friends. It was like setting of a Father Jack chain of 'Arse! Drink!..etc'

Everyone should have a Father Jack as a pet. I've been scouring the local pet stores looking for one but no luck yet. I have the old chair in the corner ready, a case of vodka and everything. If you see one going cheap lemme know.

It gets re-runs all the time in the UK.

I find it one of the best shows ever.

Each show was great.

One of the best was when the xxx film was getting shown on the iland and they were made to protest.

One small island off the west coast of Ireland. Three priests. One housekeeper. A gaggle of supporting priests. A bunch of nuns. A few late-night Ludo matches. The most consistently awful weather in the world.

Young Father Dougal McGuire (Ardal O'Hanlon) lives simply. Not ungodly but certainly unaware, the sun is always shining in his world. Happily oblivious to anything outside it, he is without doubt one of God's 'special' creatures.

Father Jack Hackett (Frank Kelly) is a lover of the sensuous life, a bon viveur. Or a semi-conscious reprobate. When not sleeping in his chair he is usually screaming abuse, dreaming of past exploits or shouting for more drink (anything from Tia Maria to Toilet Duck).

Trying desperately to remain sane in the face of all this is Father Ted Crilly (Dermot Morgan), who anxiously plays host to a number of bemused and bemusing guests - aggressive bishops, shy nuns - a never-ending parade of fellow priests and on one memorable occasion a famous lady novelist (Gemma Craven).

Constantly inveigled into playing Devil's advocate - from picketing a blasphemous movie to becoming an Elvis lookalike - Ted's dreams are of a parish in Las Vegas and a life free from embarrassment. Well, perhaps even an hour free from embarrassment.

The Parochial House on Craggy Island is set afloat on a sea of tea all the while by the Housekeeper from Hell, Mrs. Doyle (Pauline McLynn) who keeps an eye on events over an ever-boiling kettle.

Filmed on location in Ireland and London, Father Ted is written by Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews.

:thumbsup That should have been obvious to even someone like Allan.

Seems Doctor in the House is being re-run though according to others.

Steve 10-05-2004 07:14 AM

my favorite episode is the one with the milkman fathering all the ugly hairy babies on Craggy Island :1orglaugh

mardigras 10-05-2004 07:24 AM

Yes, I was referring to Doctor in the House. There's just a few pages about that show with little more than synopsis or mention. I've seen a number of good sites about Father Ted. Father Ted is also available in complete series sets from amazon.com

I would estimate the time I was watching Doctor in the House on our local PBS to be around '76-'77. I watched it every Sunday night until they replaced it with something else.

Between my 3 satellite receivers some channel is bound to play them eventually (maybe:glugglug)... I think I'll get that 6 episode set on amazon.com anyway.
