The reason why women like tall men: its generally accepted because of animal instinct for protection, taller means stronger generally. It serves no purpose in todays age, unless say you live with a tribe in the jungle.

The same reason why Americans are fat is the same reason Americans are tall. There is plenty of food, plenty of space (ATM) and a tendency for gluttony. Would you argue that more then 60% of Americans are tall, how about 60% are fat, how about 60% undereducated (read poor and stupid).
