Anyone here know anything about house construction?

Shit, people post here asking for advice on medical conditions, so I figure a question about house construction won't hurt.

Is it possible to get R20 insulation in a 2X4 stud wall, or do you have to go to 2X6?

I'd call my dad and ask (he owns a renovations company), but he's sleeping now. Sorry.

No problem. I already posted this question on a construction forum, but everyone there appears to be sleeping too.

A quick Google search says:

For 2x4 construction, you will need R12 insulation. For 2x6 construction use R20 or the new building code standard R22.

Ya, but I need to know if there is any possible way to squeeze R20 out of a 2X4 wall. Like with rigid foam or something. I know the normal fiberglass batts won't give me R20 in that thickness.

Oh... beats me. I know nothing about construction, other than our house was just completed a month ago, lol. I was just trying to help.

No problem. I am in the process of building a house right now, and made the mistake of acting as my own general contractor. I should have just ponied up and paid someone else to do all the legwork for me.

evildick 10-03-2004 09:20 PM

Actually it sounds like you can if you use insulated sheathing instead of plywood. Thank you Google.
