if surfers were treated like webmasters....

if some of the big players gave surfers the same treatment they give webmasters they would retain longer etc which in turn brings more profits.. or is there some sort of threshold on the number of members a site can retain which is why programs offer more incentives to the webmaster then they do to the surfer...

just something on my mind.. what do you guys think?

pornguy 10-02-2004 12:58 PM

More incentives to the webmasters than to the surfers???

Do you want us to pay you to surf through the porn??

Damn,

Go back to surfing.

The explanation for this can be found in AmeliaG's thread :)

their are too many webmasters anyway, off with their heads

vas 10-02-2004 01:27 PM

what i was trying to say is that if people spent as much time catering to the surfers as they did to the webmasters, maybe they will start increasing their profits... or is that too difficult? is it better to hit them with cross sales etc.?..

Depends on the type of site - content sometimes is enough to retain, and updates - but you have to give the surfer something that he'll keep coming back for. If you can't deliver that, then it becomes a challenge and will eat into your profits trying to think of other means (drawings for active members, etc).

Excuse me, but I think most do!

Specials like multi-site offers, discounts to sign for multiple periods, massive amounts of content.....

If you mean they the way they are treated here?? Hey, this is a board for webmasters and those in the industry.

pussyluver 10-02-2004 01:52 PM

Shit there are sites that give away dates, take fantasy requests, daily blogs. Maybe you're looking at the wrong sites?

pussyluver 10-02-2004 01:55 PM

Maybe it's time to look at GFY a whole different way? Maybe I should start pushing my sites??

Maybe we could start TGP threads?

Paul Markham 10-02-2004 02:24 PM

Very good question, but maybe not for here.

I would love to know what percentage of revenue is spent on webmasters, paying them, looking after them, entertaining them, advertising for them, posting on boards hoping one will join. With big, medium and small programs.

And what is spent on the content and not just pictures and videos, the entire site.

When you spend more on marketing than the product you are selling something has gone wrong.

You mean talk about business as well as beer????

That sounds a bit wierd but it could work. :1orglaugh

vas 10-02-2004 04:08 PM

charly put it well... thats what i was wondering.. sorry if i couldnt articulate myself well enough....

and yes this is a webmaster board i am aware of that seeing as i've been here for a year hehe ;) but i think the questions need to be asked about the way business is conducted in the industry and how we can better the industry as a whole.

I think he means those well known sponsors with zillions of niche sites with a cookie cutter look and 100.000 pics for 100$ content with upsells on every second link. :winkwink:

The issue IMO re the lower % of rebilling is that membership sites now are packed full of content. Looking at billing patterns and how different sites try to entice people to stay one way which is done by SOL Digital is ensure each month the old content is taken off and replaced with new.

This works in two ways it keeps their BW costs down and also makes the member renew.

So many sites just add more and more that the surfer no longer needs to keep their membership cause they have filled their hard drive up with porn.

give the surfers what they want and try to get them attached to being a member of the site.

instead of dropping old content use drm. if they cancel their membership videos don't work. then allow them to pay a smaller amount to view the videos.

i think that DRM would create more issues then it will solve.. sure it would prevent content from being passed around, but it would create more angery surfers which would make them want to chargeback... it could possibly increase the CB ratio's.. do you know if anybody tried it that could possibly report on that?

Actual study has showed me members get highly pissy if they do not have workable copies on their harddrives to view when they want. Regardless of still being a member.

I would see that as forced retention, strong arming so to speak.
I am more for voluntary retention, and providing a quality product and superior customer service so that they want to stay.

not a full membership, but charge like 3.95 a month or something small. would work even better if maybe once a week when they access the videos you pop up a promo window that shows your latest update with a special price to rejoin.

How many webmasters look at this side when thinking of promoting a site?

Rather than go for the "$50 special this weekend" (I use that as an example) maybe they would be better off financially if they looked at the site and asked themselves how well will this convert my traffic and how well will it retain my traffic?

To me if they did the industry would be in better shape.

I am sure more will when they get past the production economics period of thought.

Hey Charly,

GFY is a webmaster board and the focus is on us - those in the adult biz. If you're a site member, the focus should be on you. I'm sure that some sponsors really focus on the webmasters. That's the people that go out and get the traffic.

Since you sell content, you may have a point of view that sponsors should buy more contnent. No flame intended.

So if you're a memebr of a site, you should feel like the center of all the attention. If your a webmaster at GFY, you should feel the same way...

What percentage of that Ford I bought is marketing cost?
