I just registered a dot com domain. Someone already had the dot net domain. Is this a rare situation?

no - happens all the time

.com is just more worth than the .net :D

Yep, it happens, though .com is usually a person's first choice. Sometimes the .com was not available when the person registered the .net, but then the .com expires. That may be what happened.
