          Just about anything by Charles Mingus - "Mingus Ah Um" is particularly good.

          Old Miles Davis stuff - don't bother with anything released during his "comeback". IMO, his best is "Kind of Blue".

          For crazy, avant garde stuff, check out John Zorn's stuff, and the other acts on his Tzadik record label.

          If you like guitar-based jazz, lmk and I can give you a ton of names worth checking out there, too.
