How much RAM is enough for a PC?

Do you think 1gig of ram is enough for working with dreamweaver, photoshop, and other programs. Or do you think 2gigs of ram is a must?

DarkJedi 10-01-2004 08:45 AM

if you got the money, get 2G.

Juicy D. Links 10-01-2004 08:45 AM

4 gigs

Sosa 10-01-2004 08:46 AM

I would think 1gig would be enough, but if you have the money might as well go up to 2gig so you feel special!

strobi 10-01-2004 08:47 AM

1gb is enough

Pleasurepays 10-01-2004 08:54 AM

I know this because i studied it in school. The correct answer is 42.

depends on the computer.:2 cents:

tornell 10-01-2004 08:57 AM

1 gb

el_greco 10-01-2004 08:58 AM

1 gig is enough for the programs. But if you're going to have all 3 of those programs open at once, while you're editing some massive file in Photoshop, you're going to want 2.

:2 cents:

512mb

StuartD 10-01-2004 09:02 AM

If you have 1 gig, and never use all of it, then getting another gig will just be a waste as it won't be used anyway.

it's supply and demand.... get what you need.

Having an extra gig of ram that just sits there definitely won't speed up you pc at all.

StarkReality 10-01-2004 09:08 AM

Really depends on what you do with photoshop, if you are shooting content and working with huge raw format files, you can't get enough, 2 gig would be a bare minimum...if you just work with jpgs, 1 gig is way enough.

The more, the merrier.

Tuga 10-01-2004 09:11 AM

512 is enough. Get more if you want to play cool games.

Not with windows....

2gb is plenty and I don't have any less in any computer I own :glugglug

loverboy 10-01-2004 10:26 AM

1 GB is way too much already.. i currently have 512 and so far no issues with performance for sometime now even with miltiple applications open

Project-Shadow 10-01-2004 10:28 AM

I'm quite happy with 1gb. 1.5/2gb if you wanna have em all open at the same time should do you nicely.

dubious media 10-01-2004 10:32 AM

"640k should be enough for anyone"

Kel 10-01-2004 10:33 AM

I have 1 gig in one of the machines here. It handles things quite nicely.

Babagirls 10-01-2004 10:34 AM

512 is enough. but 1 gig will give you more power & room to add programs and shit to your pc and still run perfectly.

so, i would go 512 or if you have extra money then upgrade to a 1 gig, then do that.

warlock5 10-01-2004 10:35 AM

As was stated above, more than a gig if you are doing digital photography work in Photoshop. At the price of RAM, 1gb is fine. You might not need it all the time, but its going to help. You may consider something else like a HT processor if you are running PS and dreamweaver at the same time.

polish_aristocrat 10-01-2004 10:37 AM

512 here, never though I could need more.

johndoebob 10-01-2004 10:37 AM

512-1GB DDR RAM

Nylz 10-01-2004 10:40 AM

32mb sdram, should be enough :1orglaugh

Fletch XXX 10-01-2004 10:42 AM

2 gigs

Vitasoy 10-01-2004 11:02 AM

Nowadays, atleast 1gig. Anything more is a bonus. :)

lb_vee 10-01-2004 11:07 AM

1 Gig, but make sure you dont get 4x256 with 4 memory slots, get a single 1gig or 2x512

Bigjohn 10-01-2004 11:09 AM

The more memory you have when working with graphics, the better especially if you have more that one program running. Photoshop, imageready, your html editor, media player, etc. Have all these running at once and you'll be glad you have loads of memory.

Anything you can do to prevent paging out to your swap file will make thing run quicker and smoother.

Fabuleux 10-01-2004 11:13 AM

On average I have 15 apllications open. Dreamweaver, Photoshop, ImageReady, ACDSee, Outlook, Putty, Excel, Explorer, Firefox, ICQ, etc. I use around 700-800MB and I don't have really big photo's open in Photoshop. I would say, get at least 1GB.

smack 10-01-2004 11:14 AM

as much as you can fit on your motherboard. i have a gig of ram in a 64bit AMD machine right now and it blisters. but i have room for 3 gig, and real soon i'm gonna take advantage of that. :winkwink:

Intrigue 10-01-2004 11:47 AM

1 gig seems adequate for everything i do (no video editing or the like tho, only simple shit in photoshop) it'll chunk occassionally if i'm really workin it, so soon i'm gonna get some dual channeled 1gb dimms so i have a total of 2gb of dual channelled ddr :)

Elli 10-01-2004 11:50 AM

512MB is ok for what I do, but I don't do heavy video editing, and my PC is buggered anyway. I need to reboot every few hours if I'm doing mass photoshop processing just to clear the scratch disks. *sigh*

I think that's what it's called, anyway.

Goose 10-01-2004 11:53 AM

1 gb is more than enough, believe me!

ToolGuy 10-01-2004 12:21 PM

Well since he's a friend of mine I would say 1 pic is more then enough for me, however we have hundreds more of these if you need to rub one out :)

I say check your system specs and get the maximum level that you can...

dennisthemenace 10-01-2004 12:34 PM

The machine I work on has 2 cpu's and a gig of ram.. Haven't wanted for more yet.
