Hot or Not? DRM or NOT? (pic)

Getting ready to strip the DRM out of this site. Seems to be holding back sales. Anyone have any opinions on DRM vs Standard Membership?

Go DRM and have it so that they can only view the videos if they are an active member. Your rebill will be large.

XPays 09-29-2004 05:56 PM

do a hybrid- offer membership or a la cart drm to everyone- it's a win-win - see the bottom of http://HotelHeiress.com for an example. Surfers who are burnt on recurring can still appreciate your content and you can still milk recurring folks too... :anon

You think the DRM membership style works? Have you been using it?

Chrome 09-29-2004 06:01 PM

Xpays,
So set up the site as DRM with both membership and a token based download? I use drm with ccbill but i have a couple of webmasters that are flaming me to drop it and go standard membership.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

it depends if you are catering to webmaster customers or your surfer customers.

webmasters in our experience prefer the extra revenue the conventional paysite model generates vs. the lower ad value of the drm model. some people are experimenting with recurring downloadable drm content areas so it is evolving. also there is additional customer service on drm driven pay per view----- surfers typically need assistance :2 cents:

yes i know the getting flamed over drm ad revenue dilemma too! webmasters do not appear overly ready to accept less money on any new model--- if visa bans recurring - the drm model will really jump- and the best part is that we have sold 1000's of drms and have had zero chargebacks

Chrome 09-29-2004 06:21 PM

I recently had a bit of trouble with my DRM scheme. It's a bit different, I split profits with the models so it requires different code to make it work well. It's finally working correctly but I really need webmasters to jump on this to make it go.

Given that, what do you think would be best?

1. Keep the DRM and have it work as a membership and lose the tokens altogether.

2. Keep both the token and membership DRM.

3. Drop DRM entirely.

I'm really needing help marketing this, the content is HOT but without the webmasters behind it it just sits there.

i thought it was illegal to have penetration when someone is tied up?

doesn't matter either way. DRM isnt even known about until the surfer already has given a card and tries to watch the movie.

the only issues are normally that they don't have the latest media player. once that is resolved, everything is great.

I've been thinking about DRM as well but am torn on it. I always try to think like a surfer and that would really piss me off. I may feel ripped off IF I did not fully understand it before I signed up.

If it catches on more and surfers really understand what it mean... say a year from now, it may be better.

Then the other side says... Well, if it is for active members only it may help re-bills out. I mean if they cancel and expire, they can not watch them anymore so they will either come back, or get pissed and feel ripped off.

Ugh. Tough call to make.

Chrome 09-29-2004 07:30 PM

That's exactly my problem. I see both sides to easily. What is most important is getting traffic to the site and it seems that most webmasters are afraid of the DRM technology. I know guys like inthecrack.com do well with it, but i've had trouble getting any quality webmasters interested. Some have jumped on and said that the site sells better than any other site they are repping but they don't have enough traffic for the stats to really show anything.
