Update: Mt. St. Helens terror level raised. She's gonna blow.

VANCOUVER, Wash. -

Scientists have raised the alert level for an eruption at Mount St. Helens to a level three, the third of four levels.
They say earthquakes are "ramping up," which is increasing the likelihood of an eruption.

Scientists expect an eruption would be limited to within three miles of the volcano.

They do not expect a repeat of the big 1980 blast at Mount St. Helens.

Scientists told reporters at a news conference at the Volcano Observatory in Vancouver that they are more convinced now that magma is moving under the volcano.

Small earthquakes are now occurring at the rate of four a minute.

There also is a preliminary report that the lava dome in the crater has moved an inch-and-a-half, which could indicate pressure is building up in the volcano from gasses or magma.

Damn, I should set up a live cam feed of the moutain...

Never believe what the scientists say. About a week and half ago when this thing started, "All was normal" was the word from the experts.

The last time, there was ash all the way to Russia...I doubt it will be as serious this time....

Course, I'm far enough away from Mount St. Helen....a few hours, at least...

When Rainier goes, I'll be going north.

Cam of Mount St. Helens :thumbsup

hottoddy 09-29-2004 05:32 PM

I heard a geologist on the radio talking about how long overdue Mt. Hood is for a major eruption. If that happens, it'll take out much of Portland. :(

Raven 09-29-2004 05:34 PM

According to the news here, they are not really sure what Mount St. Helen is going to do....it could quiet down or it may be worse than the eruption (burp) in '86....

At the moment, the earthquakes have gone from 1 pointers to 2 pointers....so, it is doing something....

Don't do it...you will get caught in the abyss of ash and never make it home.

Sarah_Jayne 09-29-2004 05:47 PM

Nearly my whole life my mother had a babyfood jar filled with ash from her uncle's back yard in her bathroom cabinet from 1980. Keep safe everyone..obviously.
