Every human is different and each of us can handle stress differently that the other. Some can't handle it at all... and some may have seem much worse that your dad. There is probably a difference between watching people die and actually pulling the trigger killing innocent women and children in large numbers. All bad, but I can only assume the ones who did the worst shit, have the major problems.
Drugs would only amplify these problems.
My uncle did some BAD shit over there, and he won't even tell me all of it so I can't imagine what really went down... and he is a mess to this day. Has lots of flash backs and his wife often finds him in the kitchen in the dark (3am) on guard or some crazy shit.
Sad. Those who walked out and are OK are lucky guys.
