O'Brien to succeed Leno at 'Tonight Show' in 2009

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- NBC's "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno will retire at the end of his current five-year contract in 2009 and be replaced by "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien, the network said Monday.

Wow. Can't say I didn't see this coming, though. Awesome news for Conan fans.

Richard The Stalker 09-27-2004 11:36 AM

The Truth Hurts would say:

"This is good news, Jay Leno sucks balls.".

But he can't.

AVM 09-27-2004 11:37 AM

Conan has always been > Leno.

This is just Darwinism at work, took a bit of time. But nevertheless, Conan claims the spot he rightfully deserves.

Phoenix 09-27-2004 11:38 AM

hmm..i dont think conan is low brow enough for that audience

i mean he does make lots of poopy fart fart jokes, but they are often quite witty.

I doubt the Leno crowd would go for him at all.

I don't know, I think its a better move than say, Tom Greene....

Of course, does this mean Kilborn and Carson Daily move up a slot as well??

They said the same kind of thing when Jay took over for Johnny Carson.

Granted Carsons audience went into the shitter, and Jay got his own following, which I'm sure is the same thing that will happen when Conan takes over...

Manowar 09-27-2004 11:45 AM

Conan is funny as hell

I think its crazy to quit after 17 years - he had the chance of truly being a legend like Carson - just another 10 - 15 years - he could do that standing on his head!!

Conan hes like 45 years old where as Leno is 54 - hopefully he can pull off a longer run

Vitasoy 09-27-2004 11:56 AM

I always liked Jay Leno, but Conan is funny as hell. Good suceeder. :)

Strife 09-27-2004 12:05 PM

Im surprised to hear that escortbiz - conan is actually very popular - but maybe its in certain areas - hell when he came to toronto, the whole country went nuts.

I see alot of colleges and universities students who worship the man

baddog 09-27-2004 12:12 PM

Letterman is probably happy

I think it's bad news for Conan fans. He will have to tone down his comedy. Some of his funniest stuff he does now wouldn't be allowed if he replaced Leno.

Conan is 41

robfantasy 09-27-2004 12:19 PM

connan is funnier to me, but ppl who watch the tonight show are usually older people who wouldn't find his jokes that amusing.

From what I know of him, Letterman is never happy. He probably hasn't felt happy since 1973.

steve90 09-27-2004 01:14 PM

dont tell me they are going to give carson daily connan's old spot

Maximillion 09-27-2004 01:19 PM

Late Nite with Conan O'Brien won't be 'late nite' anymore and the show will unfortunately change to cater to the more mainstream audience. (a random Masturbating bear at an 11:30, probably unlikely). However the good news will be that the show will have a much bigger budget to bring on bigger stars and bands than Late Nite.
:2 cents:

xxxdesign-net 09-27-2004 01:32 PM

Conan.. is 10x more talented than Leno... I rarely laugh during Leno's interviews.. always do during Conan's ones...

Conan just need to hire better writters for the opening monologue ,.. and drop some of the boring frat boy humour he does like the hemoroid guy..masturbating bear.. the "Frankenstein wasting a minute of your time"... etc..

nolaman 09-27-2004 01:40 PM

Late Night is one of my favorite shows. I'm glad to see Conan's incredible talent is being recognised.

umm they don't pay to have the stars on bands come there... they scratch each other's back for mutual publicity
